1200 Replacing Skyhook Fork Leg

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by johnalex, Aug 29, 2022.

  1. Any advice on replacing left fork leg. After 2 seal replacements it still leaks.
It appears to have some of the chrome rubbed down the base metal.

    Sachs Skyhook Suspension.

Part number for the entire leg with the bottom lug is 34921461A

Can the lug be removed so that only the fork leg is replaced or even rechromed?

    Replacement tube:
    Stelo Forcella Cromato Tnk 48X640mm Ducati Multistrada S 1200 Tour 2010 > 2012

IMHO this should have been a recall as this is the fourth time seals have been replaced. I ordered a new tube and will swap them out next week.

Here is how much the left side is leaking. And this is with a new seal and bushing. The small bucket is collecting oil.

DO NOT ORDER THE ABOVE FORK TUBE. IT IS 10mm TOO LONG.[IMG]

  2. Yes you can remove the caliper mount from the bottom tube, they take some getting off though plenty of heat and brute force and it should come undone.

  3. If I had this, I'd send them away for rechroming and refinishing. They'll come back as good as new

  4. Skyhook by Sachs, Mechatronic by Ohlins :bucktooth: Which one do you have?
Old 1200S was equipped by Ohlins and stanchion could be replaced even for genuine Ohlins, but investigation for original pn by Ohlins needed.
If chrome finishing is damaged I'm sure bushings are done and have to be replaced.
Have you seen this kit for Ohlins?

    May come in handy

  5. Sachs

    Thanks for the link.

  6. Yes it can be done, I had the Skyhook forks recoated after a chip developed on the chroming. The place did have some challenges getting the lowers removed (lots of heat and brute force) and it's possible this could damage the existing finish so you may need to powdercoat the bottoms as well as rechroming.

Make sure they at least have the old bushes to ensure they fit correctly after the chroming.

  8. Not sure they are all 48mm forks, but they changed the rake slightly between those models which may change something. I would assume they wouldn't change electronics but who knows. Also the 2015 came with 330mm disks and I can't see from the pictures online if they use spacers or the stanchions brake mount is slightly longer. If they don't have spacers then your stock 320mm disks won't fit the calipers anymore.

    Fortunately the stanchions are identical.

  10. Done! Two minutes with a propane torch and leverage using the axle and an extender.
