I am trying to find more info on a relative killed in France during WW1. I have name and regiment but struggling to find further info without having to empty my pockets on the pay sites. I am aware of the commonwealth graves site but can anyone give me any further pointers please for online research. Anyone actively researching their family WW1 records currently? Could anyone assist me please? Ta, Phil
something i keep meaning to do on my grandfather, but not got going yet. have you tried the regiment(al records), approaching them directly? Depends what your actually trying to find out i imagine.
and just found this - may help? BBC - Remembrance - How to research your WW1 family history i would imagine that this year being 100th anniversary, there may be more focus upcoming on how to find out more about relatives/participants.
Found he was killed on the 13th March 1917. Buried in the cemetery at Cerisy near Albert beside the somme. I shall endeavour to make the trip across at some point to pay my respects. Need to find out more info now, which is difficult. Thanks for the info Al and TT600.
I have a great uncle in the 3rd Rifle Brigade who was killed at Ypres age 17.......although it appears he died of his wounds after one the big battles at Ypres, I cannot establish which one or what caused his wounds. My grandfather (his brother) joined the Sussex Regmt at the start of the war, ended up wounded in a hospital in Alexandria. When the war was over, it appears he was in the Essex Regmt (which seemed more logical, given where he lived) for some unknown reason. I am unable to get anything other than basic war record info (medals and regmts) because many of the in-depth records were destroyed in fires from air raids during in WW2........ So I am watching the War Diaries site like a hawk to see if their regiments get posted.
