It's the $1000 question I guess Do I restore and then sell my 996 SPS or sell it as a restoration project. It's not a fire sale but I have too much stuff. 1999, I've had it 20 years, 1 owner before me. Appreciate sensible thoughts, and stupid ones too I guess as it creates amusement in this troubled world.
Do you have the time and the inclination ? I’m in a similar position with my 748R, just needs finishing but not really sure if I can be arsed. Might just give the bike and a box of bits to MR and let them do it over the winter. RC1’s question gets to the crux, do you need the big bucks or are you happy to let it go ? Andy
In my view (and it is only that) best to sell as is. I've never seen a good return on any of the works I've done to cars or bikes to get them in good condition for sale, with the exception of any obvious faults or flaws. When it comes to buying I'd generally prefer an honest looking un-restored vehicle than paying a premium for a 'restored' one. I generally find that looking at the mid-high end of 2nd hand vehicles there's still jobs that need doing.
Yep that's where I'm at, back of fag packet stuff: Worth £10k as is ( worth £10k in bits probably) Cost £10k (plus?) To restore Worth £20k restored. If I restore it I'll end up keeping it, which defeats the object, sort of, could put it in the living room I suppose
spot on. i recently bought a tired 1994 916 S recently at auction. i wouldnt have bought it restored. im happy to tinker in my own time and do the work as/when.
Show pony, or a rider? How many actually get to ride restored to better than new/ ‘factory fresh’ bikes? In my view, there are many more buyers who’d like to experience riding an SPS or R version and that could afford to spring for the honest, unrestored, version of the bike.
Asked Ducati Wolverhampton, admittedly some years ago, what they charged, they did a down to nut and bolt restoration, price £10k Needs engine out and painted, frame painted, bodywork painted, and then replace/ refurbish those bits like levers pegs, calipers etc that are a bit tatty, think I've got all the bits Inc replacement OEM panels ( from a 996s) and forks
so no fettling to make it road ready ie rockers/followers, shims, belts etc? 10k seems excessive for cosmetic stuff and whatever you throw at it, youll never get it back leave as is and let someone else decide whats right for them get some pictures up im sure youll get lots of interest here... we all have lots of money its the DF remember
Engine should be ok, cams, followers done a while back, and been checked again by Ducati Wolverhampton ( engine out of the bike). Not done many miles since then
I bought one last year at auction for £10k. It needed some love, so cleaning, some paintwork, brake lines, belts & fluids, tyres and all the perishable stuff. If I had gone full resto I would never ride her.... and I really like this ride
It really depends on the bikes overall cosmetics and without seeing it, its hard to say. First call around and get a quote from someone to remove paint and refit the engine. Then... a full respray shouldn't be more than £1000. Levers and pegs you already have and are simple easy to remove & refit.. Leave the calipers unless they are really stuffed. If a good recond SPS fetches 20K+; with all the above you should get £17K+ Which means if you make a few calls & get the engine paint done for £2000, the spraying for £1000, you can dabble a bit, satisfy your inclination, probably have some fun & satisfaction and make £4K more than selling it as is. Plus if you find you are then unable to part with it, the renovation is not so perfect you couldn't ride it on the odd sunny day, you haven't spent that much and in anycase you will get that back when you do sell. BTW This is just my version of man maths. There are others available!
