Hi my glass on my 996 rev counter cracked while i was in the iom ! anyone know why this happens ? I know its common but Why after all its mounted in foam !!!
One theory I've read is that strong sunlight can be focussed through a (clear) screen and onto the instrument panel, which causes the crack. Apparently that is what happened to my 999 digital speedo and has happened to the rev counter on other bikes. Not vouching for this theory but it seems plausible to me.
Just the glass replaced or the whole unit, Putney? The rectangular panel over my speedo cracked spontaneously. I was standing by the bike, which hadn't even been started that day and heard a pop. Eventually I spotted that the glass had cracked. The sunlight theory is the only one I could come up with too, seems just about plausible but after 5yrs without incident it was a surprise.
MotoRadpido replaced the glass under warranty... they said it was a new unit from Ducati... Think they split the case and put old internals in? Anyway that bike was written off ages ago... My new bike has no problems with the glass but I noticed that the case has a small crack on the mounting hole on the back... Motorapido fitted the magnesium headlight bucket and mentioned it to me too.... I told them to use some superglue... Anyway on getting the bike back I had a look myself and it's very slight and they have glued it up as requested... As this bike was 2nd hand to me I have no idea how it happened.... I was going to buy a spare set of clocks but keep forgetting to look! lol.... My CBR clocks melted due to a double bubble screen magnifying the light to a point on the dash... It looked like a fag burn!
Hmmm, standard screen on mine and no fag-burn effect. As I say it went pop, like it was pressurised. When I mentioned it to MR they quoted the price of a new one to me. How new was your bike at the time?
It is easier just to buy a second hand one from ebay. The glass is a pig to remove from the 996 etc range as the surround is plastic welded on and you would more than likely have to wreck the instrument getting the surround off. It is a headlamp out job to get to the mounting bolts.
The 749R one was easy... Nose fairing off and Clocks pop off and un-plug.... Not sure how easy it is to split the casing and re fit though.... Could ring MotoRapido a ring and see how they did it? It was def new clocks on mine with the correct mileage reading so assume old internals kept....
You changed or topped up the brake/clutch fluid lately? That cracks them....no idea how/why but if it's left on there they crack. Make sure also the cap is on tight. You get a low pressure area behind the screen and it can spray on the glass if it's leaking
Yep i changed the front pads before i went to the Isle of Man ....... so i changed the fluid as well !!!!!!!!!! Oh bugger
Resurrecting old thread: just pulled my 749R out from under its cover in the stable, to find several large cracks across from the bottom right, starting in the black surround. We can discount the sunshine theory, as this was its first airing this year and it was fine when I put it away. If I pick up a replacement set on eBay, how easy is it to split and replace the case?
The 749/999 dash comes apart easily. There are no screws. Just look around where the two halves join and you will see some recesses. Insert a flat bladed screwdriver into these and the two halves will split.
Cannot believe it!! Was swapping the front brake master cylinder, changing the hose and clips (rusty) to the reservoir last night. Went out this evening and the rev counter glass has cracked WTF!!!!! Aaaaaaaarrgghhh! Not happy! So again - has anyone any experience of spitting the rev counter? Just had a quick look and it is well stuck on there - I have a spare speedo and it looks like the glass is the same size but I didn't want to break it if the glass is a Cnut to remove! Suggestions pls! And yes I've looked on eBay and only one Ducati Racing rev c for £400 odd - full set but still!
