dont really know what the safe limit to rev my 996 bip is? reved to 11 yest, but i dont usually rev past 10. will i kill my engine if changing at 11, or is this safe? also, what pressures would you recomend for corsa's- fast road?32 front 35 rear at the mo.
11,000 rpm is going to shorten the life of the engine if you constantly do it, and with the torque available there is no point revving to that degree. 9,000 rpm or lower if you feel it pulling strongly, and it would be a safer bet. I had a lot of trouble with over revving my 998 when I got it as I had a strong two stroke background, I didn't use the torque as I could\should. Constant high revving could see a main bearing\s go or possibly a big end. I have had two main bearings go on 748's and it can be costly to have them rebuilt. The 748 series can stand more revving and are more designed for that and they will go up to about 12,000 but again constantly doing it will not help the engines life expectancy. Tyre pressures seem a bit high you could try a few pounds lower especially on the back if you ride solo a lot.
Tyre pressure does depend on the road temp and riding style. Wouldn't say you were miles of though. I run upto 36 in the rear when it's cold out, and down to about 30F 31R for a track blast and change it a little depending on how it's wearing. As red says, twins aren't about revs, it's about getting the next gear and riding the torque. Saying that my fast track ECU has a limit of 11,500, my short track more midrangey setup has a limit of 10K but I do bump it a bit often so might get it raised a couple of hundred. 996 BPs are past peak power by 9k from memory so you aren't really gaining by revving it. It's a big old pair of pistons flying about too so it will be giving the bottom end a harder time than you need to. As far as I'm concerned though it would be safe, that's what the standard rev limit is for, to protect the engine from operating beyond a safe limit.
cheers for the advice. My s2r used to rev to 10 with a normal ecu, then 11 with a termi/duc race ecu. it would also hit the rev limiter at this. how come i didnt hit the rev limiter on my 996? I think you are concurring with that point of view. i am aware that peak power is around 9, so i will experiment with changing at this. Looks like mine has had a different ecu put on Maybe a different eprom) so will have to check it out. When should the standard limiter cut in?
No limiter?! Has it had an ECu change? I know someone who had some work done which included tuning the motor and the ECU and they forgot to add a limiter...didnt last long this would suggest 10500 http://www.sigmaperformance.com/996biptech.html
Click the link, its 10500... could be EVU out of another bike with higher limit. Has it never come in regardless how high? Have you hit 11k?
Densel, for road use 32 in the front seems to work best on mine with 34 in the rear. 1 psi less or more on the front and it feels quite different.
haven't hit 11,000 and dont think i want to..!!! 10 sounds good to me. just struggled to get past 140mph in 6th. tink i sould let it rev more in 5th, at least to 10 before changing up.
