This is a rather positive report on the benefits of INCREASING motorcycle use: Rider safety tops the agenda - Telegraph A key section: Both police and industry agree that traditional road safety policies will only partially deliver improved motorcycle safety and that encouraging greater use of motorcycles would lead to reductions in casualties. The document, Realising the Motorcycling Opportunity, calls for motorcycles to be included in mainstream transport policy and sets out a framework of practical recommendations as to how this might be achieved. It suggests that two-wheeled transport offers an antidote to congestion. A Belgian study, which modelled a shift from cars to motorcycles on one of the most congested roads in Europe, found that when 10 per cent of car drivers swapped to a powered two-wheeler, congestion was reduced for all road users by 40 per cent. When 25 per cent of drivers swapped to bikes, congestion was eliminated. Refreshing!
We have a strange attitude to motorbikes here in the UK and I think that a lot of people regard bikes and bikers as being a bit subversive and far from mainstream. The attitude on the continent seems very different and I can imagine other countries planning bike friendly policies but struggle to see it happening here. Shame .
It's bad enough when they're behind a wheel, let alone in charge of two wheels. I predict carnage total and utter carnage!
Quite a bit, as it happens, lucky to ride with guys who have been instructors, just never seen the need to have certificates Happy to have more whenever you want to take me out.. And you scoffed at me booking some in Feb....
Isnt that how, when we were young, a lot got into a car via 2 wheels? Most of my mates seemed to do scooter or bike then drive
I think in France they can ride mopeds from 14 yrs and so everyone tends to get an introduction to two wheels and they as a consequence drive with consideration for bikers. A much better attitude than over hear where we are so risk averse that most parents wouldn't dream of letting their 16 yr olds out on a scooter.
