Road Tar - How To Remove

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by Bikerbabe, Jul 26, 2015.

  1. During last week's road trip to France, we were unlucky enough to have to ride through a section of road where they were laying down new tar. This kicked up onto the frame of our bikes and due to high temperatures in France, has stuck itself down onto both the rear hugger (plastic) as well as metal frame parts and rear shock.

What is the best way to remove this tar without destroying the Monster and the Diavel??

    Advice welcome - thanks!

  2. I would try parrafin followed by your normal bike wash.

  3. Autoglym do a Tar Remover, but I suspect it is paraffin based.

  4. Start with paraffin and then for more delicate places use a decent tar remover. Both are oil based so will not damage or discolour paint or plastic.

  7. Gt85 or tar and glue remover

  8. What is GT85??

  9. Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover (has a blue logo/label) is what Andy uses to get tar off my 696 (particularly on my exhausts, where it and the chain fling tend to leave it as spotty as a Dalmatian).

  10. Vulcanet wipes, they are unbelievably good. 40 eur a pop over here for a tub.

  11. GT85 is similar to WD40 but appears to last longer (doesn't evaporate as fast).
