Anyone got any experience/views on Roof crash helmets? Quite like the look of them. Maybe I just want to pretend to be a jet pilot...
I had a Roof Boxer V2 for a couple of years and it was a really nice, well made helmet. It sealed well and stood up to a lot of wear and tear without any issues. I suppose you ought to check you have a "Roof-shaped" head. Mine was satin black and I agree that the heavily curved visor looks great and didn't mist too much because of its shape. Rich
The early ones are cheap on fleabay, but I think you need the later ones as the visor/chin piece was redesigned not to foul each other on opening. The closing latches are rather cheap and have to be closed and opened properly or they snap off and are charged ridiculously for repair.
I've got a boxer, might be a mk2. Unusable, do not get one. The visor doesn't close properly, ditto the flip over chinguard. Bordering on dangerous as you wresstle with it while riding. Also draughty and noisy.
Don't they tell you not to try and flip the chin piece whilst riding, but to do it whilst stationary? The chin piece and visor on early ones can't be moved together, this was later fixed and the little red/orange tabs need to be flexed the correct way to do up and to undo the chin piece. If you don't follow their instructions you will break the helmet. If you follow their instructions they operate just fine, however they are noisy and drafty, rather than styled on jet fighter helmets weren't they base on helicopter pilot's chosen headgear? The Visor on mine doesn't close properly and leaves a 15mm+ gap at the bottom, the only way I could get it to close was the raise the chin bar a bit and bring the visor back down with it. I have no red/orange tabs so probably an early version, its getting on for 10 years old.
I just bought a Shark Evoline which has same style flipover chin bar. Haven't worn it on the bike yet but its well made and has 5 year g'tee.
The visor/chin guard issue was only prevalent on the first range, they do explain that you have to close their visor and chin guard like that in the instructions. The later models were fixed and the V8 model addressed most quality problems too.
I hope you got the later model of this one too, as the version 1 Shark Evolines had visor closing and chin bar issues. On Fleabay the early ones are going cheap, but pay more and get the current model.
Evoline 2, the 3 has smoother/lighter visor mechanisms and weighs a bit less. I played with both and figured I could live with the 2 and save £150. Had Flips since the Schubeth as I wear glasses and they make life easy. Been using cheapies for a bit, Caberg and Viper as they seemed to fit better and were quieter than the name brands but the build quality paticularly on the Viper is rough. Cheers, Keith.
Hmm, enough negatives to make me cautious. Guess it'll end up as usual; choosing from what fits me from a relatively limited stock locally. You really need to try a few on I think. I wonder how helicopter pilots get on??
There's a certain Ducati rider who also flies in helicopters you could ask? I think his name is Harry, father has a nightclub in Spain, mother passed away after a car accident, nice chap.
Got a Daytona and wear it everyday, have done for over a year in all weathers. Very comfy and not too noisy. Not had to put one to the ultimate test though
Did an hours ride with my new Shark Evoline 2 yesterday, very happy with it, quiet and comfortable with good vision. The last couple of helmets I've bought have been slightly tight which helps the noise reduction I think. The only problem I'm having is taking it on and off without disturbing my glasses with the cheek pads. There is a way but there's a bit of a knack to it.
I had a Roof Daytona a while back. Great helmet - wore it for about three years non-stop. Very light and also quiet. And the shape of the opening made it possible to glance down at the clocks rather than actually move my head, which was surprisingly handy. I'd say it was the second-best helmet I'd ever owned. Beaten only by my current Bell MX-5, which is also quiet and very light and gets 5 stars on the Sharp rating scheme. I'd happily buy another Roof though cheers, Dom
You have to have a roof shaped head I wanted one 4 years ago. Went to NEC to buy one . It really hurt my forehead . The salesman suggested I get a spoon and either scoop out the polystyrene inner to relieve the pressure . Or crush it down with a spoon. WTH advise was that!!! I said if I'm paying for a new helmet il buy one that fits!!! Also pointed out that was really a bad idea. Was so horrified. By the advise I waled away!
My 2 pennies worth - someone I know had a roof which he hooked over the handgrips ony to have it slip off and hit a hard floor - I guess a drop of about a metre? Helmet suffered a 5cm split on the crown - surely that's not right? Put me right off Roofs...
