1200 Rough Running In Sport Mode

  1. Over the last week or so I have noticed my 2013 Multi GT is running rough in that at a constant throttle it feels like it is hunting and surging, at low revs feels like it wants to conk out and even on acceleration doesn't pull as strongly as it should. I always ride in Sport mode so i am used to the way it should feel as I don't chop and change between the modes all the time. In all honesty feels like the twin spark isn't running properly or the fuelling is wrong, It even cut out on me 2 or 3 times in traffic when I stopped at a roundabout.......... its a known accident spot so made me nervous.

Last night on the way home I was riding in heavy sleet and the bike was lumpy as hell so switched to Touring for more TC and ABS due to the road surface and the bike was smooth as silk and back to how I remember it should be.

Went out today in shit weather just to try things out and got the exact same, running rough as shit and cutting out on Sport mode, smooth as silk and normal running in Touring. I even ragged the arse off it for 30 miles in Sport to see it the "Italian Tune Up" would blow any crap out...same result

Head scratches all round as I cant think what operates differently between the 2 modes apart from the ECU and dealer will be having a look next week when I have a day off work.....methinks ECU remap, what say you knowledgeable lot ?

  2. Bueller? ......... Bueller? ....... Bueller? :astonished:

I must be unique then as nobody else has had the same thing occur to them ..... i'll let you know once its diagnosed and fixed

  3. Have you checked the exhaust valve?

  4. Have you tried changing one of the other options (e.g. Urban) and manually setting all the same settings as Sport, Full Power, Traction control settings etc?

You could then see if it's a Sport specific issue.

The worst time was in France when it kept cutting out. Eventually we removed to main fuse to reboot everything which seemed to cure the issue at that point.

Since then I had some similar issues running on constant throttle on the motorway a few times. The bike would surge suddenly but not cut out.

  5. Odd one really as there are no different maps, just different modes that alter the ratio of how the throttle opens, so sport will be pretty much 1 to 1 and touring has a slower ratio low down, sure the urban one just stops the throttle opening fully
so it should make any difference to running whatever mode its in

  6. Yes its still opening and closing fine, and it does so in all the modes which is why I was thinking ECU as it seems to be sport specific

  7. Hadnt thought of that, will give it a try as it runs smooth as silk on Touring but I will try manually changing the settings and see what happens

  8. One final thought - it's not the traction control kicking in if it's cold and wet?
(I realise this doesn't answer it dying on you of course)

  9. You'd notice the big flashing light if it were TC wouldn't you? I'm guessing something ECU related. Do these ECU's adjust things on the fly? If so it could be getting a dodgy reading from a sensor it only uses for sport mode, or maybe it needs re-flashing.

  10. The ecu has a different spark map and fuel map for each cylinder and each gear.
I suggest new air filter. Sport map has the highest fuelling, so if the filter is on the way out you'd notice it in the map first.
Also rapid (short twist) on the throttle may make any issues there much more noticeable.

  11. Bike dropped off this morning and still running lumpy in sport mode but fine in touring .... Handed over to the dealership workshop to see what they can find

Picked up a couple of hours later after a change of spark plugs and update and check of the ECU ....... Runs sweetly now in all modes and pulls like I remember it should do so whatever they did it worked well :)

In the mean time I got to ride 50 miles and most of it in torrential rain on this which made me realise just how comfortable the Multi is .... Felt as if the bars were attached to the front wheel spindle and I missed the comfy seat, screen and relaxed riding position. Not having bar muffs also meant my hands got absolutely soaked through
