1200 Running Hot / High Temperature After Service

  1. I don't recall the fans ever operating on my mts1200 before; but today they did.
After a brisk ride home (12miles) from having it serviced (30k service) I saw the screen reach 109°C.
Mike assures me that the coolant circuit wasn't breached and the fuel mixture was just checked, not adjusted.

Tomorrow I'll check the oil level.

    Any ideas, comments or jibes?

  2. i get a spate of these in the summer with cars, but usually in may not july.

  3. First time I rode mine back from the dealers it overheated on long tick over, not done it since but regularly see 105 on the display if in traffic, cools down once the fans cut in.

  4. Hmm. Mine seems to run at a max of 90 odd but then I don't sit in much traffic

  5. For whatever reason there is a baffle in the radiator and there was a spate of baffles coming loose and blocking the flow of coolant. Symptoms of this include the bike running hotter and the temperature rising very quickly when stationary or in slow traffic. A quick check of the temperature gradient from the bottom of the radiator to the top should tell you. When it happened to mine, the bottom of the radiator was almost cold. There seems to be no specific trigger for this baffle to come loose and no rattles when it does. Dealer was not surprised when I asked about the change in temperature and they changed the radiator without question. Andy.

  6. When mine was new it tended to run hot, fans often kicking in, and on one occasion in traffic temperature went to 112. This was alarming and I thought something might be wrong. It didn't happen again though, and with increasing mileage the temp is more stable. Now it copes even with hard climbs up twisting mountain roads in the baking hot sun.

So why would the OP have this sudden problem, not encountered before? There must surely be a problem somewhere, either the radiator, or the thermostat, or the fans, or something in the software that controls them.

  7. Sticking thermo?

At what point on the service should the coolant be changed?

  8. never heard the fan on mine, mainly ridden in hot conditions

  9. Well I suppose two weeks without a run out is the longest it's ever been left.
I had it changed at the 22,500 mile service as part of the workshop notice.

  10. I took mine back for a check when I first got the bike, granted it was December but it wouldn't go above 62. I thought it should run hotter than that if it's running in but they said it's fine. just lately whilst riding up the stelvio pass in 32 degrees heat the temp reached 105 and took ages to cool, I put it down to the air being thinner.

  13. I've done around 300 miles since....been very well behaved.
