Running On One Cylinder

  1. Hello… somewhere along the road my ‘98 monster spat a spark plug out. Fired it into the bushes.

can I run it home on one cylinder? It still pulls okay, although noisy!

  2. :) depending on distance*, you can run it home/I would run it home but in theory, you will get a little more piston/ring/bore wear than usual, hence*.

Controversial/not proven definitively, but possibly worth also pulling the feed connections off the coil that is no longer needed as potential damage to "exciter box" (BH1105 unit) et cetera, due to absence of grounded plug.

  3. Thank you… I’ll take a run into the next town. I’m a couple of hours from home, so I will make the call when I get there.

Think it has stripped the plug threads, so this very much feels like an engine rebuild in the making!

  4. Well I can confirm that an air cooled 900 Monster can indeed run on one pot… I had little choice in the end.

100+ miles as Ft William had no where open to help. The old girl wasn’t happy and I was wincing, pretty much the whole way, but we made it!

I absolutely deserve to open that engine and have its contents spill at my feet!

I also disconnected the coil as you suggested Chris as that seemed about the only logical thing to do in a very illogical situation.

  5. I took a short video after 2 hours of riding on a single cylinder… proper exhausted!

A very eventful weekend, most of which wasn’t planned.

That bike deserves nothing less than a full rebuild and restoration, which I will do and possibly run a thread on!

Despite all the injuries the 25 year old bike got me home.
