Running Temperature ‘97 900ss

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Carr01, Mar 18, 2023.

  1. After much fettling and fannying around the bike now starts and runs beautifully
However on a spin out today I noticed the temperature gauge went over 100*
The ambient temperature was around 13/14* I’d guess,
I got caught in a shower which saw the temperature drop down to around 90*
Is this a normal and expected running temperature?

So what’s the experience of average running temps from the SS massive?

  2. @Chris would you like to start the ball rolling with this highly technical question?

You seem to have a good all round knowledge of all things SS

  3. Difficult ask this Carr, a poster can put what he thinks should be the right temperature only to be shouted down by the next opinion.

Have you enough coolant in the system did the fans kick in?:Do_O

12/13 degs round Manchester, never that even the height of a Summer heatwave.;)

  4. Time for a refresh!

Top advice though, especially the heads up on the weather front.

  5. sounds absolutely fine to me, I didn't want to be too rude about accuracy and Italian electrical equipment on this fine sunny Sunday, but with past Italian cars, as long as you remember where the gauge sits as your norm regardless of what it reads, then you can't go far wrong. Any vast change from this is what to look out for, and particularly when it comes to oil temperature.

  6. Was comparatively warm yesterday, a short but informative thread in that link.

  7. Don’t worry about being rude about Italian electrics not when we had Lucas ‘the prince of darkness’ lighting our way……….

I did refuse a flight in a microlight having noticed the coil was Ducati, which may or may not have influenced my decision.

  8. Thanks
Seems higher than normal and having rebuilt the carbs from when it was running rough I haven’t really got a normal to go off as such.

As Scudders suggests perhaps I should only take it out in the depths of winter
    :)

  9. i'm sure more people will chime in in time, 10 years ago I would've added a few hints and tips but quite used to getting absolutely blown out of the water these days so will pass. Most of our tucked-away, minute oil radiators don't really make much difference on a cooking motorbike, meticulous external cleaning of the matrix/finning might see a very small improvement, more noticeable in the summer.
you haven't replaced or reset the ignition pick ups recently have you? or changed the carburettor jets or air filter?

  11. For the avoidance of doubt winter is 12/12 in Manchester.;)

You say you have fettled the carbs is it running leaner than last year hence to apparent rise in temperature. Is this the only item that has been adjusted?

  12. This’ll run longer……

  13. Very possibly and yes
I’ve had the bike a few years but this is the first time it’s been running well, just hotter, I think.
So I though I’d seek out the advice of the knowledgeable folk here.
From past experience Chris is the man!

I’m using a solicitor who always starts his email with ‘as to costs and for the avoidance of doubt’

    Perhaps you’re related?

  14. kind of you, but there are at least half a dozen or more on here who could wax lyrical on this subject. :upyeah:

  15. Solicitors sound and look an expensive option, have a mate who deals with disputes in the construction industry and always advices clients to resolve without solicitors.

The ‘avoidance of doubt’ comes from a notice in a works shithouse I had to use once. It was on a notice board threatening the loss of employment for smoking in there.

It didn’t stop anyone from smoking in there though you could cut the smoke with a knife in there, but has stuck in my mind since.:)

    So no not related.

  16. They run hotter than a water cooled bike. Sounds about the range I would expect
