Hi Guys I have had my 2003 999s at a shop for sale on behalf the past 3 months and took it home for a general tidy up, ride to charge battery etc and after it is warm the bike starts running on 1 cylinder. I thought it might be the main ignition relay so cleaned the contacts and swapped the relay with the head light one. it "might" have made a slight difference (might be imagination too) but still seriously only runs on one cylinder until you reach around 5000 rpm and half throttle or more, any less and it is only back to 1 again. Any one have any ideas?
thanks guys, i might just do the plugs anyway....but i "thought" that the front coil would work less under load than how it is currently when it is not working on light load (sub 5k) and works under heavy load (+ 5k and 50% or more throttle)...?
Pull it out its the coiled spring inside that comes loose. Think its related to the damp conditions. If it's ok then you can rule this out.
it might be a pain to do, but swapping coils over will tell you if a coil is playing up and you could replace both plugs at the same time.
I had all this recently, mine turned out to be ecu failure. Try the coil swap first though. I have a spare if you need one.
"All sorted?" Well I think so. I managed to find a used coil for $100.00 Nz from a wrecker in Dunedin of all places. I have fitted it and it certainly started and revs better but the weather has been so crap the past 4 days I haven't had a chance to try it on the road.......gale force winds torrential rain etc....im tempted but just not worth the risk. Will let you know as soon as I get a chance to ride it.
