Has anyone else experienced the chain on a 2013 multi going rusty quickly. Mine has less than 1000 miles on it and has got rusty since the 600 miles service, it has Been used in the wet weather but cleaned regular. My old 6r used in worse weather and not looked after as well is fine but chain on multi is orange and rusty. A little disappointed as never had a chain go rusty before apart from on wok hacks that didn't care about
Yep. Mine is red even after being lubed every second ride and cleaned with an old brass brush and wd.
No...what they going to say?! I have to take back for recall. Tbh I have a rep for not really taking much care and maintenance so would have weak argument, even tho I have actually taken lots of care with this one,
Thinking of speaking to dealer about it as I have taken care of it and never had a chain rust like that before. Think it's quite poor on a 16k bike
Agree. I blamed the FS shite, as all my fasteners are furred too. But the chain is particularly bad, like its never been lubed from fay to delivery for the 2200 miles and all been done in a vat of salt water
It's rusting because you are being too feisty with your cleaning. Leave the outside alone in its black crud and keep the rollers lubed. I know it's an expensive bike and I'm a sod for keeping it clean but leave the chain to do what's it's supposed to do.
Nope. It was rusty hence the cleaning, otherwise its been a simple chain lube every couple hundred miles. I dont do cleaning
Stop telling porkies bradders you little scamp you. Your using that little brush on a Sunday morning arn't you. Your scrubbing away with a huge smile on your face and standing back to admire your work. THEN 48 HOURS LATER ITS RUSTY!!!!!
If you like a clean looking chain then apply a small amount of ACF50 on the side plates and it should stop any corrosion. Dry lube the rollers, problem solved. OR keep it nice and oily and dirty looking. WD40 cleaning will not protect the clean plates from rusting, in fact it will only promote rusting.
Why is a Multistrada chain different from any other chain? I'd very much like to know. Is it made out of pig-iron?
The whole bike was treated to acf50 the first week of owning it so suprised the chain would need any more. But will give that ago. Any tips on how to get the rust off and get chain looking nice again?
Wire brush and paraffin. Don't use petrol as it is too strong and could possibly damage the seals. Haven't tried the Acf50 idea but it's brilliant stuff so why not. As I and others have said though. Please don't spend too much time worrying how the chain looks when it's oily.
I'm guessing but I would think that the side plates are polished steel with no plating. So they just rust.
I put a post in the general section, comparing acf50 WD and fs shite as Bradders calls it I went straight out and bought a tin
Yes bud. The ones run by our friends from Asia usually stock the stuff. They really do think of everything!!!
You're on a hiding to nothing - the OE chains are cheap sh*te jobs. Even if you had it replaced under warranty it would go the same way. Only "proper" solution is to buy a better quality replacement chain and then look after it the way various people have suggested earlier in the thread. Pretty poor on such an expensive bike, but what can you do - apart from buy a Honda of course
Not ot worth replacing it as it's on the tri options thingy, I'll nip to garage tommorow and grab some parrafin.
