....and bolts. Lots/most of the nuts and bolts and other steel bits and pieces on my project carby 900ss are rusty. Other than replacing them all with stainless jobbies (which I might do for the engine bolts), what's the best remedy? Zinc plating? and if so, can anyone recommend how/where I can get it done? Thanks
Replace as much as you can with stainless, as long as they are not stressed bolts, where you need stronger high tensile. You can get home plating kits if you fancy that.
ebay for stainless, I got a 300 piece set for about £40 out fits like pro bolt would have been 10 times as much. Alot of the set were unnecessary and the wrong size but dam handy in the workshop. also bought a plating kit for £80 odd and really liked doing all the brackets and bolts i couldn't source in stainless or ti. Think the supplier was Clasic plating, really helpful chap who I called a few times for advice. quite a satisfying job to do tbh.
Replace with Stainless and or Titanium - To get them professionally plated you need a lot to make it worthwhile (about 30kg!), it costs, and they will rust again. I think the tensile strength argument is marginal - I used titanium on sprockets for strength and lightness as this is un-sprung weight. There are lists on here you can use to order the sizes. Make sure you use the correct lengths as trying to tighten a long bolt in a short hole will strip the threads! The one engine kit I did buy was full of wrong sizes - so not the bargain it seemed. I hate having lots of bolts the wrong size in my garage - it just makes it harder to find the right one. I got all my stainless from Stig's Stainless Fasteners and titanium from Titanium Fasteners for motorsports and competition requirements. Both great prices and service Phil
I too have used Stig. If you want some more special, better finished bolts for prominent places, try Racebolt
