Rusty Tank conundrum

  1. If possible could someone point me in the direction of a replacement fuel tank for a 900ss.

Im looking into a few options as mine has developed a leak so its repair and repaint or replace with a new one. So if anyone has a tank from a 1991 ss I would be obliged for the help or advice.

Iv'e looked at the new ally tank option but that im afraid is a non starter on acount of cost ( £1200 plus!)

  2. Use Frosts tank sealer
Its a liquid that goes into the tank and you sloosh it about till all the inside of your tank has been coated by the sealer
Then leave to cure and set and what you have is a new tank inside your old tank
Used it twice now in my ducati tanks. Works a treat
Seals all leaks holes known to man!

  3. You can try reverse electrolysis rust removal, loads of info how to do it, i use it for old rusty parts.
You'd have to seal the tank afterwords but trust me there wouldn't be any rust left in there, it's brilliant how it works.
( when i say reverse electrolysis, i mean that the tank would be the earth connection and your
    iron anode
would be positive connection. very cheap and effective method of rust removal. see link.

  4. A friend was "advertising" one on facebook recently. I've left him a message on there to check out this thread if he's still selling it. Phil may be in touch.

  5. Quite fascinating, looks pretty simple too.

  6. Thanks all for the pointers folks. Iv'e yet to assess the damage fully as the bike is sat at Baines Racing where is spat its contents over Geoffs workshop floor removing the concrete paint! OOps.

So as I mentioned its now a process of finding out the best way forward either way the tank will cop for a repair and a re seal.

The reverse electrolysis method really is belt and braces and may just be the way to go.

Gilps, Thanks for the heads up about the tank for sale. I will definitely be interested dependent on condition. Thanks again all

  7. doesn't Geoff offer a refurb service for tanks?

  8. I'm sure it was Baines that do the refurb service as a friend of mine had his done.
I believe they cut the rusty bottom of the tank out and replace it with a new one.

  9. I'm sure I pointed another forum member in the direction of Geoff and he came back with a price of about £350.

Geoff showed me one of the tanks he had repaired and its only until he turned it over that the repair was noticeable.
