I am in the process of fitting an S2R 1000 exhaust to my Multistrada (Dont ask.... ) So what I thought would be the most difficult bit went swimmingly, the exhaust headers and Cat bolted straight up to the Multi. I was under the impression all the S2R/S4 silencers would fit and rear of the twin outlets from the cat were common So.... A set of silencers arrived today from a 2005 S2R 1000 (I have checked the part numbers and they are correct), and here the problems have started. The silencers are a different bore to the pipes (48mm outer dia on the silencer, 40mm on the headers). Furthermore the silencers are not slotted for a clamp. According to the parts fiche there is only a clamp and I cant find any indication of a crush washer to sleeve the exhaust. Can anybody cast any light on where I have cocked-up and if there is an easy fix?
I had similar when I changed my system. But I found there is an inner gasket on the outer that makes it fit snugly on the inner. Not sure if this is same for end cans. Worth a look
As these look identical to my s4r ones, I went and dug the old ones out. See pics below. There are no inner gaskets. Are they the correct link pipes? Do the 800 s2r have the same down pipes, maybe they are smaller hence the problem? and mine just had clamps, not split in the end can pipe
If you can wait for a bit (IE when it's not dark and chucking it down) I have a full s2r 800 system in the shed (I've got a full Term) and can measure them for you
What I thought was.... Header pipes for the That would be great! On my my bike, the 2 pipe coming out of the Cat are 40mm outside diameter, the silencers are 46mm inside diameter. The header pipes are different between the 1000 and 800 and I definitely have the 1000 header pipes, I wonder if the silencers are from an 800?
They look suspiciously similar, apart from the manifold with the 4 bolt holes, presume they bolt up to the head? What diameter is the pipe going into the inlet side of the silencer? (That fits into the "S" pipe coming out of the cat) And the top pipe in your first pic, is that the S pipe that fits between the silencer and the cat? If so is that the silencer end shown in the the pic? Thanks bp
maybe your exhaust is from the 998 engine s4r and s4rs these had a bigger exhaust than the s2r800/1000 and s4r with 996 engine
My pic may have been misleading as it showed both. Not the manifold end, but th either one was to show the only bit that had the clamp slits is the bit that fits to the bladder at the bottom. The rest of the link pipe just snugly fits into the end pipe and then is clamped on. Hope that makes more sense!!
Well, I think I have a temporary fix whilst I work out what to do longer term...... Pretty sure the silencers I bought are from an S4R, so assuming the outlets from the cat is the same for S2r 800, S2R 1000, and S4R, the ultimate answer is either a pair of S4R link pipes, or a pair of S2R 1000 silencers However hours trawling the internet and I found a top hat bush of exactly the right dimensions to sleeve it, 40mm inner, 46mm outer, 40mm long. so in the very short term I will probably slot the silencer to allow some "clampage" and use exhaust gum to seal the inner (assuming its not an "interference" fit) and that will at least get me on the road whilst i look for the right bits..........
Or use one of these?? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400339825286 It’s what fits from the header pipe to the down pipe on the S4RS (not the one linked, that’s an example) to take it from about 46mm to 40mm iirc. It’s quite a difference! And means nothing poking out the back so should look neater
the entire 998 system is larger tubed at the cat also. link pipes won't many a difference. you will need s2r800/1000 silencers. i have an s2r1000 full system for sale in VGC, sadly its in the uk and im not for at least a couple more months. if you can wait
Been and dug the S4RS system out to measure and take pics. Here you go. Shows internal dimension of end can, the link pipe the can fits into has the slits on it for clamping - you can see the inner sleeve to match the difference between pipes, plus a shot of the gasket so you can see what I meant. Hth.
Aaah! thanks for that, I am tying myself in knots here. When I look at the aftermarket exhaust stuff the S2r 800 and S4R "appear" to be the same (i.e. system fits both models), whilst the S2R 1000 is always a different item. So are all S2R 800/1000 bits interchangeable after the cat? (I know they are different from the headers to the cat). If my bodge works as a temp fix, I would be interested in the back end of your S2R 100 system when you get back, but I don't need the full system so I may be of no use to you as a buyer. Yours Confused.....
Awesome, thanks for taking the trouble to do this for me. I am about to sit down with coffee, cake, and a wet towel on my head and see if I can make sense of it all! Cheers!
Looked all over for these but couldnt find the right size, or even one close enough for me to "adjust"
I think we are getting there! If you could just confirm I am looking at your pics correctly I will bother you no more! 1) Your first photo of the end can dimensions match my end can - Tick! 2) If your 2nd and 3rd pics are of the end of the link pipe that attaches to the end can they will fit my end cans - tick 3) If your last 2 pics are of the end of the link pipe that attaches to the catalytic converter (aka "Bladder") then it gets interesting. My link pipes don't have a steel wool washer but they have the same 41mm inside diameter taking into account the wire wool sleeve/washer on your link pipes. And the pipes coming out of the Catalytic Converter on my bike have (unsuprisingly) a 41mm outside diameter. So if my assumptions in 2) and 3) are correct a pair link pipes identical to those from your S4RS should fit.
@Brian Park I currently own an S2R1000 and a Multi 1000 . I have to say I think it is fantastic that you have taken the ugliest part of the Monster , put it on the Fugly and somehow made that even Fuglier. You should win an award IMO. Great bikes to own and ride of course. I may have the part of the exhaust you are looking for. I was keeping it at my work address but we have just moved and I cant recall seeing it since the move. I`ll have a proper root around and see if I can find it.
- If you think that looks bad, its a good job you cant see what I have done at the front end!!! In my defence, whilst I agree the stock monster exhaust isn't great, some of the aftermarket systems for the S2Rs look awesome - but I wanted to be sure I could fit an S2R exhaust before I started spending serious money on trick stuff so this is really to check it will work. And on the plus side, besides being no great looker itself, that stock Multistrada silencer weighs an absolute ton and is located up high and behind the rear axle, that cant help the handling. if you do manage to dig out a pair of link pipes that would be great, just let me know
The last two pics are what goes from the header to the bladder, just so it’s clear. the link pipe from the bladder to the end can is the first two pics: the pic is what goes over the silver cane, ie the pipe fits in the slot, and then clamps. The other end of that pipe fits into the female pipe out of the bladder. it sounds like the link pipes would do. Where are you based? You’re welcome to try mine if local enough. I’m Gloucester way
Now I`m very curious to see what you have done to the front. I cant see how you could make that uglier than it is already though. Obviously Ducati managed to up the ugly factor when they moved to the 1200 but they had a professional team of designers working on it with a big budget. I`ll let you know about the pipes next week .
