996 Sales Call Advice

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Justatad, Jan 1, 2022.

  1. Hi all, I’m on the look out for a 996 / 998 , A chap from Moto hub is ringing me tomorrow regarding the below bike, can you chaps / ladies in the know take a look at the advert please
Does it have the correct bits etc
What questions should I be asking ? One springs to mind, is it a mono frame, or biposto ? ( if the salesman knows )
    Any other advice gratefully received.

  2. It has a biposto subframe with a mono seat on it.

  3. Ah ok , cheers Ricky
Should I be put off by that

  4. I crossed that Mono/Bip line in my rookie days on the Forum......much time was spent in rehab, I still bear the scars :scream:

  5. Depends on what you are after.
If it’s billed as a monoposto, then it isn’t.
However, a monoposto seat on a biposto subframe doesn’t make much difference to the bike, just very slightly heavier. Also, means you can fit a biposto seat plus footrests if you ever want to take a passenger.
Main thing to check is whether it is an S engine if it’s billed as an S. can’t tell from the pics though. Check the V5.

  6. Minefield. Being the end of the 996 production run, there's no consistency with what parts would have been fitted from the parts bin as standard. Much of the carbon wouldn't have been. Kosher '02MY S got a slightly upgraded engine IIRC. Fitting a monoposta seat unit was common, shame they didn't do a proper monoposta conversion with a mono subframe. 8000 miles is not an excuse for stretching out servicing. An mot history check should reveal when the miles were done. Doubt the seller's included service will be anything more than an oil and filter change. Take everything with a pinch of salt, don't take anything as gospel. A dealer service history should be detailed, not just a bottom line. Hope this helps. Andy

  7. "S 996cc" in the ad.

It is in good nick, but still seems expensive for an "S". My slightly higher mileage, not as shiny 2000 SPS cost less.

  8. This is the response I got from extreme trading regarding a similar bike for sale advertised as a mono S … doesn’t sound likely but maybe someone on here can confirm?

“New message from: extremetradingltd (1,241Red Star)
This s Monoposto. These had steel subframes exactly like the Biposto but with the bolt holes plugged with plastic grommets. The alloy subframes where fitted to the higher spec single seat bikes SPS etc”

  9. Confuse the hell out of them and ask for the standard exhaust cans.
If it has been sat I would insist on proof of a full service at that price.
Otherwise it looks nice, you can check the engine number with ducati and they can tell you exactly what it left the factory as.
As has been said they threw random stuff at the end of line bikes so make sure the carbon is genuine but some aftermarket stuff is good.

  10. Not the first time this particular topic has come up. Pretty sure someone has a kosher monoposta with a biposta subframe on here just not sure if that was OE. A few first generation 748R monoposta subframes started to crack back in 2000/2001 which resulted in a modification on the 02MY 748R built in 2001. I don’t know enough about the 996 monoposta to make a suggestion but .... it is not beyond the realms for Ducati to use up any parts left over in the bins on the run out models though. Andy

  11. It may be a sale on commission for somebody. I recently sold a 916 and when advertised moto hub contacted and offered a sale on commission. Whilst it didn’t suit me it will suit others and I think it’s a fair way for a person to buy an old bike with a bit of security and warranty that a dealer can give. Obviously it comes at a cost. Don’t expect a dealer to be able to sell at the price of a private owner. We all have to eat and keep warm.

    Message read-

We are an Italian specialist in Stoke-on-Trent, www.moto-hub.co.uk

If you'd be interested in us selling the bike on your behalf then we can chat about how it could work for you and the details of your bike?

We take a fee of course (£500+vat) and have to service the bike inline with Ducati book standard but no money at all is taken until after the bike is sold.

As the bike is sold through our dealership with warranty we tend to get a significantly higher price than private sale. People certainly like the security of buying from a shop with these bike, and it avoids the timewasters trying to send you daft offers or come to your house asking stupid questions.

The Bips tend to sell quite well, slightly quicker sale than the limited editions models.

Ps if they only want service money and wages then there may well be a deal to be done if your in it to own it.

    good luck

  12. I think you are right re: rear subframe fitment, not that i have much model history experience myself but I do have a late (2003) 996S originally listed as a monoposto which is very original and am pretty certain the subframe has never been off the bike in it's life. Despite the mono seat unit, the subframe has redundant pillion footrest provision lugs on it. Hazy memory, could be wrong but I think that earlier bip rear subframes were made in such a way that prevented a mono seat unit from fitting over it, and then later on a "one subframe fits all" fitment was made possible by a subtle re-design.

  13. It’s a bit salty at that asking price IMO but then again these things are on the up. None of the carbon would have been factory fit so they’ve been added (nothing wrong with that) as have the exhausts. It’s worth knowing/checking the correct eprom/ecu* has been fitted for the exhausts (most likely it has but check anyway. I’d also check the date stamp on the tyres, they may have a good tread depth left but how old are they? They may need refreshing, just a cost to factor in.

There’s another thread in here somewhere on the differences twixt 996 & 996S and the years, I’ll find it and link below later.

    edit: found it https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/difference-between-base-and-s-996.78324/#post-1646392

Finally, for me, one additional thing to understand is why it’s on an 02 plate? The 998 was being made at the end of 2001 and was being sold in 2002 - I’d just want to know why this one was hanging around, if it’s at all possible to find out which it probably isn’t after 3 owners.

*Im not sure on these later models if it’s an eprom change within the ecu as per the 748/916 range or a complete ecu change as per the 998 range.
