Hi All I have used an app called Tyre to travel for programming my Garmin 660 GPS for a few years, but it seems they have lost the use of Google maps so it is discontinued. What app/program you you guys use? The Garmin Basecamp program is crap! Any suggestions welcome. PS Just done 2500 miles around Germany on my 950, perfect, just wish it had a cruise control!
TYRE still works, the new Version 7.00 doesn't use Google Maps (they now use another free Map supplier) so try reloading / updating your current version. Or you could use My Route App https://www.myrouteapp.com/routelab which is web based and very much like TYRE.
I've also learned how to use Basecamp over the years and find it good for the final route planning before downloading into the Sat Nav. Basecamp is not much good for overall rout planning, for which I prefer to use Michelin paper maps. I played with My Route (free version) which can switch between Michelin and Google maps (plus others) which is a nice feature. I've not attempted to download routes into my Garmin from My Route. With My Route you need a good Internet connection otherwise it can be very frustrating.
I have used My Route too, but it splits each stop into segments and is useless when then uploaded ime. If planning a route, I use google maps to get the gist and then put that into basecamp (which I agree at best is difficult, worse infuriating and useless)
No, it is frustrating but its worth persevering over like Johnny says. I did too and now make it work for me.
Basecamp frustrating and I forget how to use it overtime! - Here are a couple of resources I did this tutorial which is excellent - you can't use the examples unless you have N America maps but it's very helpful http://www.newenglandriders.org/GPS/Learn_BaseCamp_PC.pdf Another resource - bit dull http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41134 And another
It’s the ‘no device connected’ when it is..and the rerouting around 20 miles when you move a point about 20yds at a junction...
motogoloco.com Create an account (free) save your routes, which you can share with mates for holidays/trips. As with most these things you just need to be very careful with waypoints. Also if sharing routes or even using on your own sat nav, make sure settings are compatible. Such as tolls, motorways etc. Works fine with Garmin (and the lesser Tomtom )
As an aside if you are using Base camp do not update google earth as it takes away the ability to view your route there
I was a diehard mapsource user but these tutorials finally converted me to Basecamp, I now get on with pretty well . http://ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/455445-Some-good-BaseCamp-tutorial-videos
I’m a convert to the MyRoute app, like how it can be used on Ipad, MAC, phone, pick up and plan a route as you wish, better than mapsource by miles IMO. Register for the free 31 day gold trail, hold out till near end and they send you a code for 10% off registration. Transfer to Garmin from Mac is easy. I see it also supports WiFi for tom Tom.
This is only my opinion, but Basecamp is shit !! I spent forever using it to plan a fairly simple route in Northern Spain in April, but once there, it kept taking folk to side roads or bloody back gardens chasing the little flags around that I was bloody sure I had dropped on the main roads of the route. If you can master it, I'm fairly sure it's a good program to use as some folks seem to have sussed it, but personally, I thought it was utter shit.
I Agee with Wayne. I have reloaded Tyre 7.0 on my pc, it loads but shows no map. Does anyone know if there is a free version of myroute app or is it pay only.
