Looking at sat nav for my new multi but not sure which way to go.. iphone with full Europe maps (already got Co pilot and it works superb...in UK) holder, case adaptor shown somewhere else on these forums I think? Garmin 350lm fitted by dealer. Anyone used Iphone as the main sat nav in the Alps? I have used a Nokia with success in South France but last time away it didnt want to lock on to satelites. Any thoughts or feedback welcome
Mate showed me this yesterday Waterproof Motorcycle Bike Mount TOUGH CASE for the Apple iPhone 4 SmartPhone (sku 9787) :: [ BuyBits ] they do a hard wired power source too. This is the route I'm going for sure: blue tooth headset and offski
I used CoPilot on iPhone 4S and Galaxy S2 last August in Alps and they lock on to satellites no problem at all. They works just same as they do in UK. I expect you know GPS chews battery so must be connected to power if using for more than an hour or so. This was in my camper van, my MTS came with a Garmin 220 and I like Garmin for the bike, you can get routes from internet and download these to the Garmin unit, which is nice.
No data used if using TomTom or CoPilot unless you do traffic updates or something extreme, just switch these off. Gavin (998GSB) and I toured through the Alps last summer using an Iphone in a waterproof case hard wired for power. It got him from his erm brush with the law in France to our hotel in the Alsace and the German border. Then down through the Alps to St Moritz for dinner and on to Piacenza. All done with a great musical playlist I set up here in the UK and turn by turn interruptions through my in helmet headset. It even took Gavin's phone call to say help, the nasty Froggy blue boys have banned me for trying to keep up with you! It didn't help when we were burned by two girls on a Suzuki Burgman doing 110mph in the Piacenza suburbs at dusk though. I have never seen so many bugs on a visor making the GPS view irrelevant.
I still use maps. I like planning my route out on a huge piece of paper and committing as much as possible to memory. I make the most of fuel stops and coffee breaks to have another look at the map. It's part of biking. You can always use an iPhone for finishing off, like actually finding the hotel. Sat navs are good in heavily built up areas, though, or just any town in Italy...
I did not think that you could pre plan a route with multiple waypoints on an iphone, like you can on a Sat Nav ?
You can buy satnav apps, and some are free, just do the route in google maps and load up to phone. Bingo
I use Tom Tom on my iPhone in the top of my tank bag when I need to (eg in cities), but mainly rely on maps. One limitation of this approach is in direct sunlight the phone sometimes overheats and turns itself off which can be a bit of a nuisance!
Hi I've not long since been looking at the same. All depends on how much you want to spend & how neat you want it to look on your bike although there is a massive difference in what additional features you get? My mate uses his iPhone with a £20 SatNav software down load in a waterproof cover & is happy enough with it, however I'm going for a Garmin Zumo 660 a dedicated motorcycle SatNav but at £350 ish for the unit alone its not cheap.
How do you upload it, email to yourself so you can read on phone ?, i never thought it was possible to upload them, i have both Navfree & the new Tomtom system on my iphone5
Okay. Taken the plunge and bought the Zumo 350lm. £180 saving by ordering and collecting from Halfords over the dealer supplied price. Plus the dealer has agreed to fit for free as doing heated grips ( the extra work should be negligible) In the end the idea of fully waterproof, glove friendly and designed for the job kit won out. BTW Ducati offer the Zumo 350lm or a Ducati/Garmin unit (painted red). While the 350lm is a little dearer it does seem to have way better spec and the lm version means free lifetime map updates. Just need my new bike and a road trip now
