1200 Seat Lock - Barrel Removal

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Stavrich, Sep 15, 2016.

  1. Multistrada 1200s - 2013
It seems that the cable has been disconnected from the lock/barrel. I have managed to take the seat off by pushing the lever on the latch as suggested on the Ducati MS forum - on one hand I am happy that it worked but a bit concerned about security on the other:grinning:.

Now my problem is to get to the barrel and I cannot figure it out. Any help of how to get to it, what to remove and hopefully not to remove would be appreciated (pictures will be even better  ).

I have attached a piece of string to enable the latch release as a temporary solution.

  2. @JimVee Thanks, I tried it but couldn't get any access to the lock.

  3. Sorry about that. Ive had a look at a workshop manual and it doesnt say anything about the seat lock removal or fitting.

However, if you look at the lock mechanism, there should be a nut (number 14) at the rear of the lock which while looking at the parts manual it should just unscrew?

I have tried to upload the picture from the parts manual but can't. If you log onto Ducati UK and you can have a look at it, link below.

  4. Does this help at all? It's a screen-grab page of the parts manual. See items 14, 17, 18.

  5. Looking at the parts diagram (thanks @Pete1950 and @JimVee ) and at the bike it looks like the battery and some relay/wiring is on top of the lock - it cannot be accessed without removing them (definitely there is no access from below ) .

Can I remove the battery without causing any ECU / memory problems or shall I connect another battery using jumper leads before disconnecting.

Or to invest on a memory saver that connects via the auxiliary socket?

  6. I would remove the battery if you need to access the lock, the ECU and suspension resets itself once you reconnect it. You will just have to reset the time/date stuff on the dash. Never had any issues disconnecting the battery before.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Job done! Quite fiddly and a bit time consuming as access is restricted unless the ABS control unit is removed, which I didn't want to do.
I have attached a few pics just for reference for the next guy. You can see on the first one the cable disconnected.
Easy to put back when the lock is removed but not when the lock is fitted and it has to be fitted before the cable is put back :disappointed:.
@JimVee Thanks, had to reset the clock and set it back to mph. Trip meters went to zero but the LAP counter kept the timings from the last track day.

All is back and all running OK. I cannot see how the cable came off but more than likely it will happen again

  8. Hi Stavrich, any chance you still have the pics and could repost...? I am "the next guy" and have got to do this job this weekend.

    Much appreciated!

  9. @Handtoeknee - reposted the pictures. It seems that since Dropbox removed the Public folder all posted pictures via that cannot be viewed.

its a shame our pictures cannot be saved on the forum server

  10. @Stavrich - you're a legend, thanks very much!

  11. Son of a....terrible job. And it does feel like it is going to happen again soon....cheers for the assist anyway!

  12. @Handtoeknee - glad to be of help. Typical small job that takes ages and makes you use words you never thought you would. :grinning: So far mine seems to work fine but now I am very gentle with the key.

    @Twin4me - I will try Photobucket - thanks

  13. Thank God this topic was here. did a 600 mile trip this weekend and yesterday tried to pop the rear seat off to get to my registration and insurance card ( Long story that i do not need to explain ), and my key just turned with no resistance. found this post on a quick google check....and was able to pop the seat off with a long thin philips head lent to me. tonight i tear it apart to find what disconnected.
