When i bought my R1 it came with a private plate as part of the deal, I've decided as I'm more likely to just be tracking the R1 and only occasionally use it on the road its just not worth my while keeping hold of it. Its registered with a few of the online companies and valued at around £1200-£1395 but all ive done is put the plate in searches etc so ive obviously not ticked/unticked a box thats allowed them to advertise it , although im sure theyd just write to me i guess if somebody wants to pay what theyre asking. Is there a reputable company worth actually calling or dealing directly with as just sitting here letting various online guys hike up prices seems a little stupid to me. Id rather do a deal and get it sold by actually talking to somebody. Obviously i could post it on an R1 forum but i dont think the UK has a big one at the moment
Depends on the plate. If its R1 YAM then its specific to the bike. If its R1 CHY or something then its obviously got a better chance of selling or R1 and your initials. I had an Monster S4 with S4 ??? on it, I ended up selling to an Audi garage for them to put on an Audi A4 S4. Try googling R1 and contact the company that could potentially use the plate. Personally if its not spelling something £1300 seems a bit steep. I sold mine for £500.
I have put 2 private plates up for sale with a company that deals specifically with advertising number plates, one of them, that's on my present Ducati, has been advertised for over 2 years, never had a sniff of interest despite dropping the price by 50%. I have no interest at all in private plates, just knew that the plates had potential value and wanted to make some cash.
Having had a couple on vehicles - the plate on my 1198 is now on its fourth vehicle - I'd say that private advertising would be the best way forward. Fleabay do have some, although the prices on there seem a bit steep to be fair, with claims that it reads this that and the other what you'd need to stand 400 yards to guess.. I'd certainly try on a R1 forum if you're a member, but I wouldn't bother with the dealers. Their quotations for what they 'may' get always seem to be very very hopeful. They're there to make as big a profit as poss - naturally - and i think that unless you've got something unusual (yes, I know all plates are unique!), it'll sit on their internet website for a while. Autocar mag used to print classified ads in the back (i assume they still do!), also Autotrader magazine and website both show ads at a semi reasonable price. I'm assuming as Tricolore asked that it doesn't read R1CHY, R1CH D or something similar that if someone 'mispaced' would be their name??? Ps if it's still on the bike i believe you now need a valid MOT (if it needs one) to remove it. Something to bear in mind before you go too far down the track bike route.
Still registered to the bike at the moment. I assume its easier to put it on retention is it or doesn't it matter?
£1300 seems steep to me too, don't get me wrong I'd like as much as possible but I'm also realistic, I just don't normally have private plates so don't really feel the need to keep it.
