Thinking of dipping my toe in the Sena coms market with an interest in the SRL for the Schoei helmet. Wondered if anyone has experience of the Sena Remote, that sounds a must, and any experience or need for bluetooth linking to a two way radio- I have some slightly elderly Kenwoods from my Autocom days.
The instruction manual is available to download from the Sena web site. Pairing with non Sena products is done in “universal mode”. Andy
Aware Sena do the SR10 Bluetooth two way radio adaptor and was wondering if anyone has used it and is it worth the extra cash/ hassle. Johnny you suggest you have used. Is it worth extra kit for any extra range?
I have an Sena 10U set-up for my Shoei GT Air, this came with the remote in the box along with the intercom. Whilst there are on-helmet controls these are inside the visor aperture by my left cheek so the visor needs to be opened to operate them. The handlebar remote negates the need for this so is really a necessity for the 10U. With the external controls on the helmet for the SRL I can sort of see why the remote is an optional extra. Due to the shape of the heated grips on the MV I've mounted my remote inboard of the left switch cluster. It's still usable there and in fact I prefer it as access to the more important switch gear isn't impeded. Not sure which functions are easily accessible through the on-helmet buttons for the SRL but the remote for the 10U is easier than the helmet buttons for the 10U. I rate the 10U highly, my touring buddy bought one too and the bike to bike full duplex comms are great in comparison to PMR radios, though limited to line of sight up to about 1km maximum. This is perfectly adequate for our two man tours. We had some Chinese BT headsets before that didn't work half as well as the Senas. Range was OK bike-to-bike but the switching between sat nav and bike-to-bike was flawed and even more so between my mate's iphone and bike-to-bike. The Sena universal Bluetooth, in respect of the 10Us at least, isn't great. It seems to exclude all other functions and is what drove my mate to get the 10U as we tried this with the Chinese BT headset. It worked but my Sena was just locked into bike-to-bike and that was it. Maybe firmware updates have improved this since though. Having everything inside the shell of the helmet is great and makes the set-up durable as nothing gets knocked of or damaged. My mate who's not that careful about such things broke the antenna on his Chinese BT unit after about 6 months, it still worked though. The Sena sets we've had for a couple of years now and they're still fully intact. Though the rubber bung for the charging port on mine is missing. I'm also a former Autocom advocate and only moved from a fully featured set-up (GPS, Phone, PMR, PTT, external PMR antenna etc.) as the MV has zero space under the seat. On group rides I use a Sena SR10 to connect to a Puxing PX888K PMR. I also have the optional PTT switch. The radio and SR10 are stashed in my tank-bag with the antenna poking vertically out of the zip, the PTT is Velcroed inside the left hand guard. Pleased with the way this works though I haven't used as much as the BT bike-to-bike as I'm doing fewer ride-outs with the group that tend to use PMR. Yes, range is better and group size as well as universal compatibility are all benefits of PMR. With external antennas we were getting decent reception over about 5km in real world conditions. All in all I'm pleased with the whole system, not quite as seamless and logical in its switching, and what I called the priority stack, as the Autocom but pretty damn close.
Wish I could get my remote in that position on my Multi @Bumpkin. I have the 10u and well impressed with the sound, but that rubber bung in the charging dock don't stay in there for long does it.
Have the 10u in my Shubert C£ for 3 years now, the rubber is still in the charging socket and the remote control is still unused in the garage. I connect to my niece, same 10u, and my wife SHM10 all the time.
I have the 10S. No remote but I find the helmet controls very easy to master. Simple click and spin to skip tracks. Sound on the phone/intercom is great, callers cant hear much background noise at all. Music however, is very tinny and frankly awful - to the point that on my new lid I'm going apple airpods. In terms of pairing it's pretty easy. You have to bare in mind the channels and handshakes on some devices if you want more than one at once - which can be tricky.
It does if you put some vaseline or petroleum jelly around it. Which is also what you should be doing on battery terminals. It's safe with electrics & mitigates water ingress. Got a Sena 20S.
I have the 10u which I got primarily for the sat nav, because I'm blind Any way, how do you manage to use your 10u without using the remote.
I have a 10u and use the remote attached around my mirror stalk, I’ve used it without but it’s a bit of a pfaff! You can do most things with certain sequential presses of the plus and minus buttons on the helmet but you have to have a very good memory (not me) or carry the instructions with you
How did you manage to create room for the remote around the mirror stalk NM ? +1 on remembering the + and - button pressing sequence on the helmet, I get difficulty switching the damn thing on yet alone remembering what does what
Tried it in all sorts of places including the grip (not enough space) and adjacent to the mirror clamp but always ended back there
At least @Nigel Machin I'll have a chance of remembering to take it with me when I walk away from the bike. Lost count how many times I've left the damn thing behind
