Service time

  1. Well it soon comes around and this time it's the belt change on my 1198s,as usual it will be going to JHP Ducati coventry for some TLC,there are a few things that need addressing,I'm reverting back to a standard clutch as a slipper needs to much maintenance and tbh it's not realy needed for the road, also the over flow pipe has burnt through and now has a hole :frown: New grips required ,engine management light came on briefly but went out within seconds, also the air tube, that is bolted onto the air box ,one of the bolts seems cross threaded and want nip up GRRRR but apart from that,I've had a trouble free summer.

  2. That don't sound cheap fella

  3. I've got a slipper on my 1198s. How often do you maintain it? I'm not to sure as only had the bike a few months

  4. Its about every 1000 miles when I get the grunching noise when I pull away, then I know it needs servicing, last time I had it serviced,it cost me £120,ouch.so thats why im going back to standard, horses for courses,as they say .

  5. It's quite easy to service a slipper clutch yourself...

  6. Tbh,its having the time,as I work long hours and most weekends,so when I do have free time I dont want to be messing with the clutch but riding and enjoying.

  7. Ive never serviced my slipper clutches. They just work.

  8. True, but you can revove the plates sequentially, I usually pop them on a broom handle or stick as I remove them then tie wrap them. This ensures they go back the way they came out. If they look ok I'll clean them up with brake cleaner.
The ball bearing ramp thingies. I check the ramps are not worn then lightly grease them. Also check the basket tangs aren't shagged while your at it.
Slap it all back together. Don't be ham fisted fitting the spring screws as the pillars are aluminium. Either get torque settings or take it easy boy.
Then I go to the kitchen, make a brew/open a bottle and sit there like a smug twat thinking I'm brilliant.

  9. Well done to you mate.

  10. Just had my 1198 belt service done and including oil, filters, brake and clutch fluid etc it was around £400

  11. Now that is a good price.

  12. I usually take advantage of the discounted winter service deals tht the deakers offer. I had my 1098s serviced last winter with belts for £330.

You wouldn't believe how easy it is to service a slipper yourself, it's a doodle. I bet you could do it in a fraction of the time it takes you to earn £120 (unless you're Paul McCartney !)

  13. That price was on winter rates

  14. Bloody hell, mine was just under a grand, for a new battery, not fitted, belts, service and valve check. On a 996. Think I've been robbed, bikes only worth around 3k

will never be paying these prices again for something that sounds like a tractor. Be glad when I can offload mine and buy a jap

  15. So how is it done? Take it off/apart then clean and replace plates if needed?

  16. Cover off, remove 6 x collets and clutch springs, pull off pressure plate, remove plates (keeping them in the same order to go back in. There will probably be a couple of convex plates that need to be orientated a certain way, so stacking them up as they come out is the easiest way to ensure they go back in as they came out), remove the centre nut (Clutch holding tool needed), remove the spider and then the centre hub (making sure to collect the 6 small ball bearings in the process.

Measure your clutch pack height and replace plates as necessary to get the correct stack height (can't remember the figure off the top of my head)

Refitting is just a case of doing it all again backwards. - Clean the centre hub and grease the ramps that the ball bearings sit in, you can then sit the ball bearings in the grease so that you can push it home. I always push the hub towards the engine and twist the hub to check that it actions freely and the ball bearings stay put. Replace spider and centre nut (big torque wrench time), Clean each of your plates with brake / clutch cleaner and put them back in the way they came out. Replace pressure plate, springs and cover.

    Easy peezy lemon squeezie
