Severe Knocking/Internal Noise

  1. 2007/57 1100s 11000 miles, valve clearances, oil, filters and belts 4k ago. 1 track day in its life, ridden with intent to bring smiles.

Gradually over the last 30-40 miles I had a noise which I mistook for the noisy open clutch I have fitted, my engine has started making a rather awful noise. If I'm honest it does sound quite bad. It only happens when under load and not when in neutral revving the bike. The bikes performance does not seem to be impacted, no other issues other than 'a noise' at this time. No smoke either.

Bikes going into my ducati specialist in 10 days but wanted to prepare for what it may be.

    Any ideas?

  2. Belt tensioning pulleys, belts fitted incorrectly and they are now on the way out. Don't ride it.

  3. my multi does this under load especially when wife on back very loud, swore blind it was big ends that was 5ooomls ago still fine.
    still get it checkd tho.

  4. Thanks guys. It is not being ridden and I'll update to confirm diagnosis.

  5. Big ends have failed. Bikes in for a bottom end rebuild and a comfortable 4 figure bill.

  6. Ouch!

Can you give us more description on the noise?
All gears? Speed related? Under load?

Mine's turned 31,000 miles and still sweet!

  7. sorry to hear - not good news at only 11K

  8. no luck.

  9. Any gear at around 3,000rpm, sounded as if it was coming from front cylinder but the noise was obvious something bad was going on down under.
The noise however was only occuring under load and seemingly whilst accelerating.
    general metallic rattle noise.

  10. The reason I ask is that a friend has similar symptoms with his.
We had a look last night and unfortunately it's not good news.

We drained the oil which had been changed only 2,000 miles ago. On the sump and in the oil were a lot of metal shards, all very thin pieces like the edge of gears...
It appears that his gearbox is on the way out. Luckily he's just picked up a new gearbox for under £150 off ebay, as opposed to over £1,000+VAT for new.

That was the cheap bit though, as it now needs the engine splitting...

  11. Not sure where in the world you are but louigi motos near me (im in Bristol) are ducati specialists - im guessing if you can get the engine out and get it to them (they are in clutton, nr Bristol) then it would make their job a whole lot easier...and cheaper.

  12. It's going to Al at Ducati ProTeam.
