Sheared Mud guard bolt

  1. Just returned from a blat out to Worcester Ledbury Stourport and return which involved some pretty saucy B roads with a few bumps wobbles and humps.

Anyhow, whilst washing the beastie I noticed the guard was loose.

A closer look revealed that it was only being held in by one bolt where there should be three. Two on top as below.

    and one underneath

Underneath bolt was missing and the left hand top one had sheared!

Feeling is that bottom one has come adrift allowing the guard to flap which has subsequently sheared the top bolt.

Im pissed as this guard has not been off the bike since Iv'e had it and I'm due to go to Germany in two weeks and wont have time to faff drilling the old stud out so ill have to go with two. I might even leave it off for the trip.

I would have thought they would have been loctited in? All i'm saying is check em when you clean the bugger!

  2. Mine were lock tighted in but on removing the splash guard to adjust the chain the bottom nut sheared despite using just a normal Alan key. Prefer the bike with it off but will get it drilled and tapped t some point to re fit. Shame some of the fixings are so poor for a 15k bike. Still i have taken the view that the grin I have riding forgives most sins

  3. Have to agree that some of the fasteners are made of cheese. Tightening two of the gravel guard bolts to the recommended 5Nm resulted in the heads snapping off...

  4. I had exactly the same problem, I have a new fastener, just need to get the rear wheel off and drill out the broken stud.

  5. Leave the guard off-looks like shite anyway. Screw the EU rules ;-) Drill it out and pay a virtual visit to Pro-Bolt. Ti or SS.
