what kind of spring weights vs body weights are people running on the 1098s? I have seen a bunch of the post by Dan Kyle on other forums but wanted to see if there is any more informed opinion on here I'm about 18.5st in kit, the standard 80NM spring is way too soft according to dan kyle i should be looking at a 105 spring but after speaking to harris today, they think thats too much. i notice that Dan Kyle advocates machining the locknuts so the spring can be run with less preload ( the rings foul the shock body before getting the the end of the adjustment thread. anyone on here jump from a 80 to 105 on a standard 1098s ohlins? did you need to get any valve/shimming done?
RT - Digital Product Search Dan Kyle recomends the occasional weird, non conformist thing. It its track only then probably about right. The std is built for someone with probably >4st less
u legend thanks paul, so a 100 spring it is am i likely to need to adapt the shims or will i get away just swapping out the spring? The OEM ohlins us a bit basic on the 1098s, it only has a single damping adjuster also how often should a shock be overhauled. i doubt this one has ever been done, its only 8-9k miles though
Probably worth having it serviced, especially if you are getting someone else to fit the spring anyway. Cant see why the valving would be too much of an issue, not like you're racing BSB but while its being services they may recomend better ones. Depends on your budget. If it were me, I'd change it myself and see how it went
I am debating whether to spend the extra £150 on a service, you are right of corse om no BSB racer, but I have found with beefing up the springs in the past that damping no longer functions properly as the stiffer spring over powers it. i seem to remember reading somewhere that ohlins valves had a much narrower spring weight working window than showas i can swap the spring on my own, will suck it and see i have a 95 here and can borrow a 100 to test, shame swapping out the 1098 shock is a such a ballache
compression and rebound damping do have a working span based on the spring weight i would look to buy a ttx which a good supplier would set up for you exactly to you your spec....
thanks andy if money was no object then yes a TTX mk2 spring and valved for my lardy ass would be the way to go, I'm just trying to get this bike setup cheaply in a non-tyre trashing mode for an almeria trackday in a few weeks I will just swap the spring out for now and see how it goes, I just RTFM and found there is a rebound adjuster too doh !!
That would be the shitter of a 3mm (may be 4) allen screw at the bottom thru the hole in the swingarm then..
