I'm looking for a replacement helmet, I currently have a Shoei, no idea which one, it is noisy and after a couple of hours creates pressure points on my head as though I'm growing horns :Android:. After a considerable time in Fowlers yesterday I have come to the conclusion I have a Shoei head as everything else had pressure points immediately. I hope my current helmet reflects less technical padding and new ones are better as I don't want to sit in a shop for two hours with a helmet on my head to see if it happens. I'm considering the Neotec, nice close fit, no immediate pressure points and a drop down visor. But, searching this forum, there appears to have been a problem with water ingress, anyone got one and is it still a problem? I don't choose to ride in the rain but we do ride abroad every year and then you get what the weather throws at you. I don't want a wet head. I'm also not sure about the ratchet strap, I prefer the d ring straps. Also anyone got the Gt Air as that also has the drop down visor. I tried the Schuberth flip helmet, comfortable but not as much as the Shoei, also having adjusted the strap to the shortest possible setting I could still get my hand in the gap. Can't find sunglasses that fit inside XS helmets hence the need for the built in visor. Thanks in advance
I use a Neotec, I tried a Schubeth but it just doesn't fit my head. The Neotec isn't particularly quiet but I always use earplugs. At first I wasn't sure about the ratchet strap but in practice it is a non issue. In the rain the other day I had water running down the inside of the middle of the visor. Upon inspection there was a small gap between the visor and it's seal which closes when the visor is pressed onto the seal. I rarely open the visor preferring to flip the front for ventilation when stopped or at low speed. The built in ventilation is very good but adds to the noise. I have been using the helmet for over a year and this is the first time I have experienced this problem, but I rarely ride in the rain. The sun visor is brilliant. It is a helmet that is popular with plod in these parts and I would certainly have another.
I have a Neotec, which I use for blood biking only. Compared with my Arai, It's noisy, draughty and suffers from Water ingress at motorway speeds. It's aperture is not as wide as the Arai, which makes shoulder checks trickier. I like the visor mechanism on Shoei and that's about it. Arai don't make flip front helmets, otherwise I'd have one for Blood bikes. I tried pretty much every flip front on the market and felt the Neotec fitted me best. Sorry it's probably not what you wanted to hear..
The sides and top of the visor. The problem is I'm am focused on the main job when it occurs so haven't had opportunity to remove the helmet and identify the cause or exact area.
I find that if I open then close the visor a small gap is left at the top middle. If the visor is pressed onto the seal at that point the gap closes, there is a small amount of movement at the visor hinge. Since discovering this I haven't had an opportunity to test whether it is an effective solution in the rain. I do like the flip front though.
I've worn Shoeis for years and currently have two XSpirit IIs. I did recently try on an Arai with the new shell shape (is it 75 ?) and although one size larger than the Shoei, it fitted really comfortably. I won't buy the Arai though because of the poxy visor clip which is too fiddly and I cannot do with gloves on. I'll probably try the new Shoei NXR next time as I've seen a number of club racers wear them and it gets a good write up. Andy
hmmmm, it is a lot of money to spend and find it leaks! Thanks for the feedback though, always valuable and helps with a decision, which is...I don't know!!! I think I'll try on the GT Air, it has the inner visor and D straps and if I don't like it I'll revisit the Neotec. Shame there was no more adjustment on the Schuberth as the feedback I got on that was it is very quiet. Shame you can't test ride a helmet!
No, that is my next stop. Fowlers selection isn't huge. I have a vague recollection that Sharks smallest is too big but maybe it was something else I tried on, it was a while ago. I hope next weekend is dry enough for a jaunt down.
I don't have a Neo but replaced my XR1000 with the new NXR in April. As far as I'm concerned it's ace, amazing reduction in noise levels, larger pinlock area, it's lighter than the old XR and has 5 air vents which provide lots of refreshment on the days that it's been warmer than 10 degrees up here lol! I had fancied a change to Shark but every model of lid felt uncomfortable for me. I tried the GT Air and was tempted but the paint job on the NXR won me over. Sunglasses and a clear visor??? Ehh, naw!!! Get yourself one of the light reactive pinlock jobbies if you don't want to go down the route of a tinted visor.
@DaffyDuc Genuine Shoei GT Air, CNS-1 ProtecTINT Light Reactive Pinlock Insert | eBay Like it says, this one if for the GT AIR but they do the whole range I think
