3 yrs waiting to ride. Quite a few quid spent and it breaks down after 24km on way for first MOT since 2016.... Guessing recrifier
tbh the battery is always going to get warm on the bike, especially with it's location. Does the bike still run? easiest way to check is to disconnect the stator plug into teh back of the reg rec and measure the AC current (somewhere on here someone will have posted the figures you are looking for) on a 2 wire stator. If the stator is outputting enough, then measure the reg rec output to the battery, should be 13.7-14.5 Volt I believe at idle, rising slightly when revving but only slightly, I had a 748 where we were seeing nearly 19v when the bike was revving, and while the reg rec was definately fried, it was fried because the stator had burnt out also, hence why you need to test both. a melted connector for the stator wires is also a big giveaway. oh, and... when you get it right it will be worth it. Honda's aren't exactly known for having superb reg recs.
Because bike on Sorn RAC won't recover, but recovery guy a absolute star & collected 2 x batteries from local bike merchanic and using both (got about 10 miles off each) limped it back to there yard.
Sorry that happened to you. Mosfet reg/rec upgrade should be a compulsory mod on these bikes. And yes, I've had it happen on a honda and a suzuki, so it's an old tech thing, not a Ducati thing.
I used to commute across town on a Honda 650 Dominator & I have to say it was all rather jolly in that role.
Since you mention it, you probably are tortured on your 748 after an hour or so? I imagine there is a reason why you have "a modern Fireblade"?
Oh dear... You see thats the difference between some riders and others. Marc & I are never bored by our Hondas... Nor were Freddie, Wayne, Eddie, Mick, Alex, Valentino, Nicky or Casey come to think of it!
I have had a few. Efficient….erm….did I mention efficient? Just realised I still have two. I ride on one and walk behind the other.
I bought it last year after a 15 year break from riding. Thought I'd only be able to get one bike past the mrs so I went for something I thought would be an 'all-rounder', and indeed it is... it's a great bike, especially on track, but it's just so boring at normal road speeds. I bought the 748 a few days ago, because I love the looks, love the nostalgia, I miss v-twin sound and feel, I knew it would handle well, and put a smile on my face. I was not wrong. I may be wrong about the dent it will put in my bank balance though.
No you were being a cabbage! Here's a boring Honda for you to consider. So boring & efficient that Marc can ride it at the most insane lean angle one handed.
I'm glad you bought the Ducati, I've had mine for some years and truly dented my bank balance with it by upgrading literally everything. Its wonderful fun. But honestly, its not all things, all the time. I'm fairly sure there will be times when you are glad you have the Honda, or if its on its way out the door, there will be days when you wish you still had it. But I could be wrong!
