Hello everyone, My 900SS ie has a switch on the side-stand that, according to the user manual disables engine running/ starting when the stand is down. But it doesn't do that. Bike starts and runs very happily with the side-stand down. ... but there has obviously been a mod done at some time. The switch does seem to be connected, and the wiring loom has obviously been altered. So - is there a known mod that I ought to know about? I can see that it might be quite a good idea to have it somehow wired so that the engine won't run in gear with the side-stand down. So that you couldn't start it in gear with the side-stand down. But obviously I don't want to experiment to find out! Or am I missing something? Thanks, Nick
Hi, no you're not missing anything. If your SSie is like my 2000 Monster then a mod is available to allow you to run the bike with the sidestand down, so long as the bike is not in gear and the clutch is not engaged.
Hi, yes the sidestand bypass is a well known mod. There is a kit to do it or some manage to alter the wiring with a jumper lead. Steve
Oops, that should have read: so long as you don't engage the clutch whilst the bike is in gear. If you do, the engine should cut out.
My old Harley would start when the bike was in gear and the sidestand down..... ...as a plate glass shop window found out.
Ahhh - all wisdom is here! And amusement as well! Thanks, all. Anyone care to share the details of this mod - just so that I know how my bike's wired?
The diy mod usually involves a piece of thin wire shaped something like a staple, used to bridge the two active contacts in the multiconnector that used to lead to the sidestand switch, which has been removed. Note that its a 3 pole connector but one of the wires goes nowhere after the connector, so is irrelevant. Or at least, that's how it is on my yr2000 M750. Pukka bypass wiring kits are available from TPO, and another company called something like Electraeon. As far as I know its also possible to achieve the same result by wiring a diode into the neutral switch wire .... which is probably how the kits work anyway, but they're plug and play. There was a thread on the diode mod on the UKMOC website.
Thanks, utopia! Yes, links below. Kickstand Switch Bypass Kit and Electraeon SideStand Bypass for Ducati motorcycles. The TPO sidestand switch eliminator (Kickstand Switch Eliminator ) looks as though it does the same as the 'staple' idea that you mention...
