Silencer Refurb

  1. Hi all. Its a real pleasure to be back in Ducati world after a 30 year break (swapped my 860GTS and a Yam 750 triple for a Guzzi LM2 back in 87).
Anyway, totally fell in love with looks of the white frame 900ss and scored one on Ebay. Bought it unseen but seller was willing to ride 40 miles to hand over so I figured it was going OK!
Now working my way around a 45,000 mile 16 owner(!) bike. Its held up remarkably well and I love riding it and fixing various issues that rear their heads as I go along.
One question at the moment is the possibility of refurbing the brushed satin finish on the silencers. They are scratched and a bit tired looking. Dont really want replace with non-stock items at the moment. Any ideas would be well received.
    Thanks!

  2. Hi, welcome.

had reasonable success with fine / ultrafine scotchbrite pads, use plenty of water and go with the grain (with circumference) it's fairly labour intensive but gave an even finish with proper effort

  3. I stripped mine down as part of an exercise to remove the baffles. I used a scotchbrite pad on a polishing wheel. Be careful as the material is quite soft. It's not really an issue but I realised quite quickly that i was at risk of removing the writing. When I had finished I had them anodised to try to protect them. You could only do that though if you stripped them. I reckon you could still do a decent job with them complete, ideally with a polishing machine or by hand using scotchbrite sheets.

  4. Yes, be aware that scotchbriting them will remove the anodising, which is what protects them from corrosion.

  5. Mr Termignoni ensured there are lots of mint standard ones in the back of many garages - ask and thou shalt receive, no doubt - easier than getting your elbows out of breath with Scotchbrite

  6. Dont' do it. By the time you finish you will want a pair of open cans. They go much faster when they sound like Lancaster bombers.

  7. Do what I did.......replaced the ally tube with carbon ones from PJ Engineering.

  8. Great replies, many thanks. The advise about corrosion after scotchbriting is most helpful. So I may take the advice of Borgo and ask if anyone has a mint pair lurking for sale. Thats me off to the wanted section I guess!
I'm keen to keep a stock appearance at the moment

  9. don't think standard brushed alloy silencers were ever anodised.
FWIW Honda toolkit included fine scotchbrite pad to clean 1st generation brushed alloy Fireblade silencer.
