1200 DVT Skyhook Or Not?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Tally, Dec 5, 2022.

  1. Hi All
Just wondering if MTS owners had their time again would you go with Skyhook or non auto suspension?
    Is it reliable?
    Is it expensive to service/repair?

looking at a couple of secondhand MTS one with and one without and can’t make up my mind. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. I had it. Glad of it. Faults and all.

  3. I was similarly nervous of it, ended up going for a Pikes Peak instead. It's pretty reliable from what I've read on t'internet, but just niggled me for some reason

  4. Some people didn’t like the early version on the first DVT’s (I thought it was fine) but the newer version on the 1260 is excellent.

Personally I like it, it reacts to differing road conditions and speeds and is easy to adapt for pillions and luggage.

I had a problem with the wire being damaged on my DVT but it was replaced under warranty (£2,000).

  5. Thanks folks. GMoss what were the faults you refer to please?
My main concerns are potential for complexity/faults also linked to servicing cost. Also read from some owners in various sources that it can react in a slightly unnatural way doing things at wrong time. I had it on a 19 Tuono factory and it was superb. Just wondering if the Ducati one works well and is reliable.
Does it affect servicing on the suspension or is it just unplugged and then you can service it as normal. Many thanks in advance.

  6. ouch £2k? What was replaced?

  7. I bought my 2015 Dvt new, unfortunately knocked off it two weeks ago, probably a write off
I was like you, thinking would the skyhook cause reliability issues, mine doesn’t have it, I’ve ridden mainly with a pillion over the years on some big road trips, just put a tad more preload on the rear shock & I’m sorted, this doesn’t really help you does it, all I can say is the multi is a bloody awesome tool
    Good luck in your search.

  8. Many thanks Justatad that’s really helpful and sorry to hear about your spill. Hope you’re ok and you get back riding again soon. Best wishes.

  9. Yes. 2013 TS age was better imho in that it seemed to operate much differently at different adjustments, where first 2016 DVT had less adjustment and seemed to always be the same. Sure there is risk against electrics, but I used the modes a lot and it made total sense to me: urban so soft and lower seat around town and good in wet; touring for normal fast riding; sport for track and very fast riding when bike would start to bottom out.

  10. I had a basic 2013 twinspark and ended up fitting Andreani fork internals due to excessive dive two up. Otherwise, just a case of reaching under the seat and turning the preload adjuster if I got on to roads where I wanted to push on a bit to tighten things up.
A high speed weave ( a gentle side to side motion rather than a death weave) was never resolved. That was around 110mph + …obviously not possible in the UK…
I bought mine new and tbh the extra £2.5k seemed excessive. My gut feeling is the £££ would be better spent on cartridge inserts and an Ohlins unit..with second hand though, it has to depend on the difference in price.
Different bikes I know, but had electronic suspension on a few bikes now 1290GT, S1r, and now my 3rd GS.
I would prefer top quality, manual Ohlins. As the electric versions always feel like they are not exactly in the sweet spot. The KTM was either wallowing or too hard and if you hit a mid corner bump (even small ripples in the tarmac would throw it off line..)
The GS I feel manual suspension could be dialled in better, but it is the best so far.

Convenience is brilliant though, being able to switch from magic carpet ride to firmer and sporty on the move. I find myself doing this a lot, soft setting when entering town/approaching speed bumps, back to firm when reaching the curves again.

  11. Skyhook is brilliant. Change settings on the go, without messing about.
41k miles on mine and still works perfectly.

  12. Sensor behind front left fork and connector block under headstock. And swapped out complete rear shock at 450000miles for a secondhand unit , ebay £150.

  13. Either way it’s good mileage ;)

  14. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

  15. They replaced the whole unit, included labour (If I'd had to pay myself then I would have just tried finding the break and soldering it)

  16. Been wondering the same on an older 2014.
    There’s 2 bikes I fancy a basic 1200 or a GT with skyhook etc a grand difference.
With it being an old bike it might be a money pit like my 2012 monster was.
I’ve got a Diavel and the suspension is shite.

  17. Take it to a suspension specialist, pay them about £50 and they'll set it up correctly for you.

  18. I have been looking for someone by liverpool, no luck as yet

  19. Kais in Atherton are reputedly the best in the north and not that far. You can ride in ride out for £50 for set up session. Prices may have increased since I was last there. They are in the BSB paddock so high level.
