My Brother has been Been looking at a 1198S with slip on Termi's on a standard system ,will this need to be remapped/chipped to get the best out of it?... and will it be OK to ride as is. My 1198s has a full 70mm system with corresponding chip, not sure what to tell him!..
Pretty sure the ‘not for road use’ slip ons came with its own ecu. If I have remembered that correctly, your brother should be asking for the standard ecu and cans. Andy
I have slash-cut Termi's on my 1198S, and the bike has the appropriate ECU fitted (dash scrolls 1198S RACING when the ignition is turned on). That said, I still think the bike would benefit from a custom remap on a dyno. I have the original cans and ECU. I didn't realise the end cans were marked "not for road use"?
I found this out at MOT time, the tester must have gone out of his way to find the stamping & failed the bike. It's stamped on the underside of the cans at the front, you will need a mirror to see it.
The Bike comes with standard pipes and system but has Termi slipons fitted and is running the standard ECU, will it be OK to ride as is or will it need a remap to get the best out of the termi cans ...will it do any damage if he leaves it as is?
usually there are 3 systems out there, stock, slip on with ecu and filter, or the full pipes with ecu and filter. You can run the slip on without the ecu but you will run a little bit rich... if you don't find ecu with them then you can get KN filter and have it mapped by someone with OBD capability. but it doesn't rally hurt anything just running the cans. Youll notice more dirty pipes and maybe a bit less mpg
Sadly I have no experience of that particular engine and if it is running with O2 sensors. Certainly when I decatted my 2012 Multistrada, between the 2 O2 sensors and ECU it did pretty well. Running lean would be your concern, HOT pipes and a beige coloured exhaust would be obvious signs but if the current owner has been running them for any length of time and the bike looks/feels okay, I’d say in the fullness of time get a basic map upgrade either by buying the correct ECU or getting a dyno run.
