Slotting the belly pan

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by chickenman, Jun 14, 2012.

  1. Has any DIY Multi owner slotted the belly pan rear bolt holes to make servicing easier, ie, by not having to remove the centre stand for oil and filter change, cleaning, etc.

The belly pan bolts look like they can be loosened about two turns before touching the centre stand, and if slotted, would allow the pan to slide forward and off.

I know the centre stand bolts are very difficult to remove with the Loctite, but it only has to come off once for this project.

It will also need to be marked and filed slightly both sides with a round file to allow the Allen key clearance in the two bolt heads.

I can only see two issues arising…
    1. Would it compromise the integrity of the holes? and,
    2. It would be best done after the warranty period ends.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Don I have done this as it's crazy to have to remove the centre stand to do an oil change.

Integrity of the holes/ slots....who cares....the belly pan bolts straight into the engine so is held on tightly anyway! The slots will prevent any additional fore/aft movement (if the is any).

Warranty....if such a small mod negates the warranty then one has to seriously consider if warranties are worth it? I cannot believe Ducati would be so pernickety....but admit I am not a legal person.

Filling....is a good idea to protect the grommets.

There was a post on Ducatisti or maybe ms with pictures about 9 months ago!

  3. If memory serves when this was done they used shouldered bolts this held the gromets without over compressing them, and then filed the slots to give a lead in when the belly pan is refitted, I think several people carried out this mod so there must be more info around I'm surprised its not an official upgrade/recomend as it saves quite a lot of time and hassle.

  4. Thanks guys for the info. I did a search on both forums and came up with nothing...but hey, you have confirmed my thoughts on the modification being worthwhile, which I will do in due time, as I have just had my dealer do a warranty oil leak from around the filter seal, 7400klms, cleaned up, and NO LOCTITE used on the centre stand bolts by request...(gives me some breathing space) I have a 2010 demo with 5 months warranty left.

I hope you both enjoy using your new "C" spanner plus as easily as I do.

  5. Thanks for that link Andy, I don't know why my search came up zero on both forums, maybe my wording wasn't good enough.

  8. Thank heaven us colonials have the English ... I searched too, but didn't find it...perhaps it was because I looked in your info pages and it ain't there ;)

  9. There must be something lacking with the search engine :upyeah:

    Ducati.ms...nothing
Ducati.uk...got this thread only after it started!
    Google...got the lot
Ok mods do your stuff.

  10. Fritz.....on the to do list ;-)

Don......Ok mods do your stuff.........sorry, you'll have to elaborate for me

  11. All vBulletin boards everywhere (in my experience) have crap search facilities. Don't bother with them. Google, etc, all the way.

  12. Sorry Andy, I may have over estimated your position, but I can't figure why I didn't get the same search results as Google, trivial, I know

PS. has it stopped raining there yet? It's p.....g down over here.
