Slow cranking

  1. Hi guys only had my 2012 Multi for 4 months now great bike and love it, now i am new to v twins always had triples my question is when starting is it normal to turn over so slow when cranking her up if that was a triple i would think flat battery. Is there a battery upgrade cheers guys.:upyeah:

  2. if it starts then youve got no probs

the more cylinders you have the smaller the size of air per cylinder its trying to squeeze and get over TDC. 1200cc divided by two mahoosive pistons is always going to be a battle, hence the starter gearing is quite low which ultimately turns it over slow....

  3. you could upgrade the CCA of your battery.......some of the newer technology ones are small but powerful, like shorai batteries.

  4. Most Ducatis are reliable starters, I wouldn't worry about it unless you start hitting problems.

  5. Fig did you ever own a 748 916 996 st early monster...............

  6. No, but my brother has, and he's not had any starting problems. You gotta look after them, y'know...

  7. Cheers guys that's all i needed to know :upyeah:

  8. If you need to start your bike 4 or 5 times within ten miles, you definitely bought the wrong sort of bike. Might I recommend a Suzuki Bergman...

  9. Welderman, Its fine I wouldn't worry, as Andy said, Two big pistons, high compression = slightly slower turnover compared to a triple or four. My Multi and Diavel both did this. If in doubt I would recommend a battery optimiser. simple and cheap and keeps the battery topped up....

  10. There are times with the 996 when I hit the button, it grunts a couple of times then bursts into life. Even worse when cold as the air is denser. Its just one of those things. Dukes do however like a fully charged, healthy battery, anything else can be a problem.

Leaving a bike sitting with an alarm system ticking away will, over time reduce the power in the battery.

Both the 996 and 900 ss went first at the latest second time. Also from cold getting the art of what the bike wants in terms of choke is an art, although obviously that doesnt apply to the current mutleys

If it hasnt gone by third or fourth time there is probably some ignition issue but the battery should cope if you keep it in tip top condition.

  11. In other words they are great unless they're not :upyeah:

  12. You wanna try an early RSV Mille. You get one chance to crank it over, it won't go a second time. Ducatis are a piece of piss in comparison.

  13. Bloody right. I got so sodding fed up of the clocks resetting to KPH etc when it failed to crank properly and having to go home to get the book of words I sold my Mille!!

  14. A GS ( or other BMW 1200 twin) is just the same - 4 ot 5 starts in succession then discharged. Not a problem in normal use though.

I plug in the charger when working on the bike if I know I am going to make a few starts.

  15. Optimate 5, I've got them on everything I don't use every day. 55£ fleabay.
Also high specification leads from battery and starter motor $150, again fleabay.

  16. Ride it regularly, that helps...
