Slow Starting

  1. Can't believe I can't find anything on here, sorry if my search wand is broken but here goes.

My 1098 turns over about 2-4 times before starting which seems slow compared to others ive heard starting. But if i add a wee bit of throttle it is always below 2 turns of the engine.

Things I've done (Not a lot by the way):

I've replaced the battery and not much different (I thought I'd win on this as the voltage was only 11.4 now 12.3)

    Possibilities I've read/thought of:

I see upgraded leads but find it hard to believe Ducati got that bit that wrong to create high resistance in the leads but maybe. - (have read this one)

The starter is going so opening the throttle lowers the compression slightly - (My possible thought)

Throttle bodies out of balance, didn't think this would it as seems to run very smoothly once up and running. - (Me again)

Valve clearances - again not what I think would be a starting issue more a running well at high loads but happy to be told otherwise. - (Wish my mind would stop now, I'm going to have to rebuild the bike at this rate)

Any help from previous suffers would be helpful thank you.

  2. Heavier duty starter cables are likely to help (at least on on older models they do), don't assume Ducati got it right, rather they saved a couple of quid...

  3. Its an 09 1098 so old enough. I'll make some up then. But how come they started alright from new, or did some not?

  4. I fitted Exact Start cables to my 1198S, which was also a poor starter. It did improve things, but it wasn't "night and day".

  5. Might it have something to do with the CCA rating of your replacement battery? When renewing a battery, you’ll find batteries from different manufacturers with the same AH and voltage rating, but with higher or lower CCA rating (cold cranking amps). Needless to say, the higher the CCA, especially with big twins, the better.

  7. Right well cold start is not the problem unfortunately. Tried hooking up a friend lithium ion battery and same. Also I hadn't paid enough attention to the starting. It will not start at all without throttle. But with throttle, and only minor I may add say will hold at max 2.5k if I left it at that position, it will start on first turn of the engine every time. Could it be a slight throttle body balance problem, but it runs lovely with no constant throttle issues of surging only reason I'm not gunning for this idea.

Again as always any help would be magic as I like perfection in my bike.

  8. I can’t remember but is there a fast idle cable on those or is it a stepper motor? As it’s 2009, I’m guessing the latter. It may be your stepper motor isn’t functioning as it should, or perhaps your TPS has gone out of sync ? Just suggestions

  9. Have you checked your earth points on the engine and frame ? Physically undo them, give them a good clean and if you have some, a blob of dielectric grease, then do them up. As has been said, replacement cables is better but not night and day better. My 1098R was always sluggish. Andy

  10. And depending on mileage and how long it's been a poor starter, the sprag clutch could be the culprit. Andy

  11. Beging to think this may be the git to be honest.
