Ok so for £5 gbp I purchased 3 rdx hdd backup drives, two 500gbp, one 750. Buying them as untested, small risk possible good gains. I plug them all in via usb or directly to sata and have an issue. Can not initialize them via disk drive manager in windows getting I/O error. Same goes in Linux. Hdd diagnostic software says all good and I did even perform low level format on one of them but still I/O error when trying to initialise. Any idea why, does S.M.A.R.T have right protection capability? Any suggestions how to make them live again? Even PS3 that formats and uses anything hangs on that.
Hmmm, WD drives? Tried WD Smartware? I seem to recall that there's something about 'unlocking' a drive in that somewhere.
Toshiba drive but will try wd software. In essence it is a hdd password that is on for user and master. However security level is only set to high not maximum. From what I seen on the net I should be able to do a security erase prep and then same for unit under Linux. It would do low level format and unlock temporarily but then I could just issue normal smart commands to stay unlocked and remove password. That is theory as reality HDD is fine, responds to command till about 5% of format where it kicks out password incorrect. Grrrr I will crack it.
