Smoke On Start Up

  1. Just got a Panigale 1298S that's only done 1500 miles.
I've noticed it smokes a little on start up but clears after 10 sec or less... Is this normal?.. I'm used to honda lol..

  2. Hi,
Is that a new Ducati model?

Are you sure it is smoke or could it be condensation? Condensation would be normal on a number of models.

  3. Lol sorry typo.. 1299S

Could be condensation.. But smells like oil

  4. Condensation could also smell a bit oily, it has after all mixed with exhaust gas.

  5. I'll keep an eye on it.... Its not bad.. But I was surprised that an expensive bit of kit like this smokes on startup...

  6. It’ll be condensation

  8. My 1200R monster started doing this, puff of oil smoke at start up, turns out it broke a valve guide, new head under warranty. Was diagnosed by sky high hydro carbons when an exhaust analyser was used. Pics of the head and broken bits, now a nice workshop ornament! 1572D0FC-7A42-4E0C-AD3F-C698ED8150E8.jpeg

  9. Blue smoke is oil, white smoke is condensation...what you smelt is probably unburned fuel and tiny amount of oil.(no way a bone cold engine with the choke on won't release some fuel/oil mixture in the air)
Either way if only for 10 seconds I would not be concerned even if blue.
Also if the bike has been stored for long time the valve seals might harden up a bit, should soften up with use.
Keep an eye on the oil level and if not using more than 0.2l over 500km...relax & enjoy the bike.
