Howdi, was doing an oil change there on the 1199 and the left side oil filter cover bolt snapped while I was torqueing it up to 13nm. About 1/4 of the bolt is stuck in the engine and the rest will turn in and out at the moment (so it turns in a good bit but then won't fully tighten). I was just wondering if it would be ok to run the bike with one side held on properly and one partially, given that there are 2 rubber o rings holding the cover in place also. It will be a few weeks before anybody can look at this unfortunately! I have no idea what type of pressure there would be on the back - I know the cover takes a good bit of work to get off.
I wouldn’t if it were me but it’s up to you. If it does let go it will spew oil over you rear wheel and if you manage not to crash then the engine will seize itself. But it might be fine
If you've ever tried to take one of these off, you'll know how much effort it takes, no way it's coming off easily. The helicoil failed slightly on mine on one side a while back so it wouldn't torque up fully without it spinning. I ran it for a little while before I could get someone to re-helicoil and had no leaks or issues
I’ve changed my filter several time so I know how they come off but I still wouldn’t risk it but it’s all personal choice.
Cheers for the replies. I think I'll take a run locally just to see if anything drips. The bolt only lost the very end so it tightens up a bit before it spins through where the broken bit is. I shouldn't be doing anything major between now and getting it in somewhere for a fix.
You would be safer putting in a stud or bit of threaded bar and then a nut on the outside. Less chance of stripping the hole in the casing completely when you nip it up very gently.
