So 996 or 998 & Differences between standard & S Mono & Biposto

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Old Jock, Mar 28, 2014.

  1. So reading the 916 996 thread I'll be in the market very soon for either a 996 or a 998. My personal leaning is towards the 998 more power, later bike.

I don't want an R its just too much bike and too much money, but a standard or preferably S with low mileage and in good nick.

Whats the difference between the S and standard, is it Ohlins rear shock only or are there others.

What are all your thoughts on 996/998 standard vs S

Just looking at prices 998s seem to be rising, for a good low miles one we seem to be talking circa 8k up to 10k for a good S, or am I being had with that sort of price

    Your input would be appreciated.

    John

  2. Hi John. Have a look at the Ducati.ms site - this thread in particular:- http://www.ducati.ms/forums/56-superbikes/61307-differences-between-998-998s.html

I had a 998 a few years ago which I sold about three years ago and regretted it terribly! I bought a 998s about six months ago and now I'm as happy as a pig in shit!

I paid about £5,400 for an '02 model that had done 18k miles but well looked after with a service history. I won it on fleabay! I hadn't seen it but had lots of photos and spoke to the owner who seamed to know what he was doing. anyway I turned up to collect the bike armed with my pockets full of money - the chap took me into his garage and.....WOW! good condition and all the docos looked good (I'd already done an HPI thingy checky thing). So I took the bike out for a ten mile spin before I handed over the cash...and I've had a permanent hard on ever since! :Wacky:

What I'm saying is - you can get them cheaper, you just need to be patient and have a little bit of luck. But you are right - prices are beginning to rise, so be prepared to part with maybe about £6-6.5k from a private seller or maybe even more.

... you won't regret it! you KNOW it makes sense! :upyeah:

  3. Hi,
I've got a 988s Final Edition in my little collection with less than 2000 miles in total ( sorry not for sale ). I think only the Final Edition ones came with full ohlins and the extra trick bits. For sure go for the 998 rather than the 996 and even better if you find one with the 5 spoke wheels. Good luck as there a great bike all day long , mine only comes out to play every now and again.

  4. Bostrom and Bayliss had the same equip as FE. although FE's came in mono or bip.

    6&8R's were better specc'd

  5. Dare i say the 998S mono was more rare in this country than the R……...

  6. 700 996R's
    700 998R's made.
Don't know how many S monos though.

  7. I've had a 996s and now own a mono FE. In all honesty, for me there is little real world difference in the way they ride. Other then the 996 seemed to have to revved slightly more, that is about it. However, I would also add that I've owned a few 748's and other than how slow they seemed, again, not much difference in how they 'feel', which I know is a personal thing. Some folk can tell the difference in susp units, but they all feel roughly the same to me.

The FE is going nowhere, I've read there were something like 50 mono FE in the UK?

I've a real hankering for a Bostrom rep, but wifey wants to know why I keep looking at Wonder Womans bike!!!!!!!!

  8. Mine is also a mono Final Edition, I remember reading somewhere also that the mono numbers were really really small as most were biposto models I think only about 50 total bikes came to the UK.

  9. not FE..they are common as muck 998s mono (genuine) i think it was 28 imported into the uk..

  10. i was told only 500 996r.

  11. Thanks all keep em coming though if anybody has anything to add. This is useful

So the 998S has a different engine to the 998 standard, damm that means my search parameters get even narrower (and more expensive)

Probably start looking from about May

All this is very much appreciated

    John

  12. No, 500 for road use with headstock plaque + 200 for racing use with no plaque. many of these were put on the road.

  13. easiest way is the S has a deep sump motor...
