Solved: Hyper821- Big, Big Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Superwombat, Nov 20, 2019.

  1. Hello everybody
First of all sorry about my spanglish!
    I need help. I have a hypermotard 821 2015 OEM with 12.000kms.
I bought her 6 months ago. First 2 or 3 months she runed fine. I started to experience some starting problems when hot. Those problems were increasing but when the engine had fired up everything worked fine. When temp went down she started fine.
But...i travelled for one month and when I arribed I tried to start and no way...
I tried changing the battery...doesnt start

I was reading in other forums that the main reasons are: battery, starter motos, poor battery cables section or one-way clutch.

I changed the super expensive starter motor with a new denso. Nothing.

Today I tried to start with a car battery connected...nothing. She doesnt cranck...i

    Where is the problem?
I am planning to update the battery cables but I think this won’t solve the problem...could be the one way clutch?
I am annoyed with this. I paid 465€ just for the starter motor... and I have ridden just 600kms since I bought it.
Very bad experience with my first ducati.
My other bike was a ready to break ktm 690smc and here I am again...
    It is a bad dream.

Could anybody give some advice please?:pensive:

  2. Are you getting any error codes on the dash?

  3. Sounds strange that it would crank but not start with the original battery but won’t even crank with a car battery!

  4. No error codes

  5. I am thinking about the one way clutch but it is very expensive as well :triumph:

  6. How can it crank with the std battery and not with the car battery fitted? Have you done anything else to it?
The car battery is definitely charged and connections are good?

  7. I don’t know what happens...
In the first video I have the yuasa battery.
That was the last day it started.
But I am sure all the connections are ok... well tightened no corrosion...
And this afternoon I tried to start with a big battery and nothing. I checked the battery first and gave 12.61v... enough to start up

  8. All fuses checked...
When start can hear fuel pump, soelnoid... everything seems to be ok
And the starter motor works well

  9. Starter switch ?

  10. It sounds like the sprag clutch to me, the starter is spinning without turning the engine.

  11. I agree with @Birdie ^^^^ in the first vid it definitely sounds like the starter motor spinning but not engaging and thus not turning over the engine.

  12. It works because the starter motor is turning

  13. I think that could be the clutch as well but it has only 12000kms...
I saw a video of a man changing it and I should buy the clutch, the driving gear and some part more...nearly 400€ more:triumph:

  14. Did you buy it privately or from a dealer? If the latter, I'd go back to them and see if they'll underwrite the cost of parts or at least make a contribution. I wouldn't have thought the spray clutch would go after only 12,000 Km, even with the cheap starter cables they use.

If you do change the sprag clutch as well then invest in a set of these, they'll extend the life of the next one.

  15. It seams odd that your starter should be faulty after 12,000 km they are a very reliable part and last well, having said that if the starter was faulty, that could well have contributed to the sprag clutch wearing out early.

  16. It’s really important to make sure you have a healthy battery, healthy starting circuit cables and healthy cable connections.
If any of these are in poor condition, it puts extra strain on the sprag clutch and will soon kill it, even on a relatively new bike.
It’s unfortunate that you replaced the starter motor without accurately determining that was where the problem was but you can’t blame the bike for that

  17. Is the 'old' starter motor really defunct? Perhaps it's stlll serviceable and can be sold on to recoup some money?

Now that you're that far into the insides of the crankcases you may as well replace the spray clutch before putting it all back together.

  18. I bought it privately nor from a dealer.
    No warranty now.
And related to the cables I contacted with Exige to update them...

  19. I am going to buy another new battery to dicard this and the new starting cables probably will arrive me before chrismas...
Last week I was checking (visually) All the connections and seemed to be ok...well tightened, no corrosion points...as well all the front and back fuses and no one damaged or with bad colour.
The Oem starter motor Is a taigene. Is well known that this starters ara shit...ducati has changed the part reference and now provides a denso one.
Was reading in other forums many people with problems starting when hot finished these issues replacing it.
My problems began with this...when hot does not want to start. Becase of this I thought the problem was there and decided to replace it but no luck...
Anyway if the battery was faulty or the starting cables were in bad condition or any of the fuses damaged what I dint understand is that the starter motor turns perfectly...
I will keep on discarding things...
I am not a mechanic but the oneway clutch appears to be the main cause...starter motor turns but not engages the engine...
    Pffff...dont know:pensive:
