  2. It might look serious to you, but I'll bet there are many on here who have ridden bikes without helmets, probably does not look so bad to them.
As long as the screws are ground off and not sharp on the inside it should be okay.

  5. When I was a young 18 year old in 1977, I would regularly go out for a ride on my brand new BMW 750 with no helmet on, just a pair of sunglasses, in Germany. Many modern countries have conditioned individuals with safety regulations so much that those individuals think that they will die if they don't comply. My thought is that since 1977 I have never fallen off a bike and banged my head/helmet, so how risky is it not to wear one? Would it be safer to smoke? Many people who would be shocked by the above picture will happily go out and smoke a fag.

  6. you could be forgiven for thinking this was just a picture of a helmet but no, in fact the owner is wearing it, and has been wearing it since a mate attached the camera brkt.

  7. I started riding in 1968, no helmet required back then although i did wear one most of the time, If I carried a pillion I would give them my helmet to wear if it fitted.

  8. I'm finding it hard to comment on this without using the words "F***ING STUPID" !
Only someone who is truly brain-dead would do something like that - which is ironic, because that is what he will probably become anyway if he ever has an accident...

  9. On the one hand it's definitely the nanny state at work and these rules are implemented by those that seemingly want to suck the joy out of everything. But it also comes from the medical establishment who have to clean up the mess when it goes horribly wrong. People that smoke pay a huge amount of tax for the privilege of smoking and money always buys you privilege.
Oh, and the person that came up with the neat helmet idea. Their brain isn't worth saving anyway.

  10. On positive note, when he does drop the bike and pierce his skull and end up brain damaged there will be a bike for sale cheaply. I applaud his foresight in keeping the money roundabout in full swing.

  11. ok guys some different views from people different culture from different countries and views from those who remember when you didn't need a helmet in this country

but I think the point is education
i.e what do people perceive a helmet is for
something you have to wear because its the law
or something you wear to protect your head
a lot of younger generation I have spoke to over the years through my job don't see a helmet as protection just something to stick on your head to stop the old bill pulling you over
ok we have all been young and stupid but .........

  12. As previously mentioned I didn't have to wear one when I started riding but chose to most of the time for safety, I wouldn't go 100 yds now without a helmet I wouldn't go much further without full leathers.

  14. No doubt claiming they have done it 'properly' instead of bidding it on with the adhesive pad provided...

  15. And they are something that I have never possessed in my life! We get the UK bikers coming here with that old saying "All the gear all the time", dressed from head to toe in black leather only to find that there is more chance of dehydrating and fainting than there is of falling off and needing the leathers. They then see the French coppers on their bikes in shirt sleeves, some have even made it to the ripe old age of 40+ and are still alive.

  16. I had a low speed off ( not much more than walking pace) 18 months ago, hit my lid on the curb broke my shoulder blade in three places and had scuffs down my leather trousers and jacket, dread to think what my skin would have been like without protection. I won't be taking the chance to find out.

  17. Whether or not helmets should or should not be compulsary is not really the point here...
Ignoring the question of where the sharp ends of the self-tappers are going to end up in the event of an impact - the helmet is clearly illegal. Apart from the fact that it has been dangerously modified, look at the state of it! If, and more likely when, this idiot falls off and/or drives into someone else his insurance company will probably, quite rightly, refuse to pay out for any injuries. Assuming, of course, that he actually is insured - if he's prepared to wear a helmet like that what else would he take risks with?

  18. Could I just correct that, the helmet is clearly illegal in some countries. The whole point (no pun intended) is that not all countries have helmet laws and those that do do not all have an ACU/BSI sticker requirement.
And therefore you should wear what you feel comfortable with, as you have had an off you will wear leathers. On the other hand there are millions of people who smoke even if they have never had a smoking related event, and I would guess that their risk is greater.
There used to be a saying "Speed Kills". I was living in Germany at that time and knew that the UK authorities were lying to the population because we had no limits on the Autobahns and despite many very high speed trips it had never killed me nor any of my mates.
The problem with your country, the same country that I served for most of my life, is that nanny state tries to control everything and does not necessarily tell you the whole truth. They even try to dictate to you what safe alcohol levels you should consume. The don't believe that you will look after your bike or microlight yourself in a way that you preserve your life, they make you have annual technical inspections, they even make you have medicals to keep your pilots licence if you have one. Over here we are expected to be responsible and have some common sense, that is why we have no MOTs on bikes, permit to fly inspections on microlights or pilot medicals for microlights either.

  19. Perhaps that's why the French motorcycle death rate is approximately 50% higher than here.

  20. Where do you get that information? I would be interested to see it and also interested in the number of bikes here compared to the UK.
I very much doubt if many of those deaths are due to mechanical failure, which an MOT might pick up.
