1200 DVT Sometimes Doesn't Want To Rev Past 5,500 Rpm

  1. Hi folks. Got a problem that's been bugging me for a while on my base model 2015 DVT MTS (registered May 2015) Sometimes the bike won't rev above 5500 rpm then a few miles later does rev normally all the way through? I usually warm the bike up before a ride, and can happen from start of a ride or after a ride where the bike has stooped for a short while then restarted as far as I can tell. Im not talking about about thrashing through the gears, just normal riding up through the gears. Also found some false neutrals between 4-5-6? Been in the warm weather part of summer (for Cumbria!). Oil/chain ok etc etc last serviced in June for its 1st annual service (£110 for a tyre kick at J&L's, oil change not needed til 9000!).
Had the bike nearly a year now and it's never been like this before even in winter. Starting to think is oil getting round ok, or DVT not doing what it should. Doesn't matter which mode either. Tried urban touring and sports.

    Any ideas, please? TIA

  2. Sticky exhaust valve

  3. Agree on exhaust valve, that is the flapper valve in the exhaust system and not an exhaust valve in a cylinder head. False neutrals are usually from not being firm / positive enough on the shift.

  4. Deffo Exhaust Valve. I locked wired mine open for a couple of months until I fitted an Arrow decat pipe. This was on (unofficial) advice from the dealer as it seems if you get them replaced they just do it again after a while.
Fixing them open may cause an engine light but there are various ways to get around this. See other threads on the topic.

  5. defo exhaust valve
    More trouble than its worth!

You may improve the gearshift by adjusting the linkage a little to suit your boots etc..

  6. Thanks everyone. Yeah could be summer boots caising false neutrals. Used to my big clumpy touring boots. As for the bike not pulling - probably needs a squirt of some decent lubricant on the external flapper valve pulley?

  7. Had a look at the valve and indeed seized in the closed position. Managed to unseize it do it was moving and returned to closed ok. Took the bike for a ride much better. Seems like I've been missing the power for ever (or at least a few months). But in way home must have seized again as whilst riding through the revs on the way home it stuttered and seem to lose power again. Then just thrashed it and seemed to free off and felt great. Thanks for all the helpful comments. Anyone taken their dvt mts bike back to the dealers for this? Can the valve be dismantled easily ? TIA

  8. I think they have to replace the whole silencer under warranty. Easier to just cheat it as they naturally sit open so all you have to do is make it think it's turning by adding some resistance like a spring. I myself got a DUC-EE cheat device from eBay for about £30 that plugs in and bypasses it.
