It's coming to the time of year when many of us take our bikes off the road for the winter hibernation, I was discussing this with a colleague today. He told me that he has just SORN his Land Rover and to do it on line it was going to cost him £35! but to print off the form and send it to the DVLA it was free. Now I have had at least one bike on a SORN through the winter since the system was introduced and never paid a penny! As we all know the death off the TAX Disc (and associated where to put it thread) is upon us, is this yet another way for the government to screw the motorist being sneaked in with the new rules? Anyone else heard of this or has my colleague been done over by a dodgy web-site?
Yea, I nearly got caught myself by a dodgy website, only realised when they wanted extra for a debit card payment, DVLA accept debit cards for free but do charge for credit cards. I was Taxing not SORNing BTW.
I saw a warning about this site, evidently it's not illegal what they are doing! You can appeal and get your money back but they still charge an admin fee of £15 legally!
Yes, there have been lots of warnings about this, they come up high on Google searches and people assume they're government sites.
My wife had this a few times, luckily I was there before payment was made! For E111, passport and sons passport, and son same with driving licence
Well I have spoke to the DVLA in he stated that they do not and will never charge to SORN a vehicle. He also said if you do come across another website that tries to charge for a SORN or indeed additional charges for any of the DVLA services you should report it to the DVLA via there website: "gov.uk/misleadingwebsites". This doesnt seem to exist but this page Avoid and report internet scams and phishing - GOV.UK suggests reporting it to google! Another point when you SORN a vehicle it is now indefinite, previously you had to do it each year. Obviously if you TAX or scrap the vehicle the SORN expires. Hope this helps someone from getting ripped off so please spread the word.
So your dim colleague chooses to pay £35 to a private company for a service which the government provides free of charge. And you represent this as "yet another way for the government to screw the motorist". Priceless!
You are clearly are incapable of reading accurately so my aim was to warn people like YOU! 1. I never said he paid it I said " to do it on line it was going to cost him £35!" He actually sent the form directly to DVLA. 2. I asked a question "...is this yet another way for the government to screw the motorist being sneaked in with the new rules?" I did not as you put it "represent it as ... yet another way for the government to screw the motorist" On my last post I made it clear what the situation is with SORN and yes that is Priceless!
Correct and that’s the point they look identical, so until you investigate further how do you know if its a genuine site or not? You need to be very careful. The best way is to type the web address in the address bar and not rely on search engines. I concede that my first post may point a finger in the direction of the Government but at that point I was asking a question which I did not have a definite answer too. Now I have and I hope by sharing my findings it stops someone becoming a victim of a scam.
I'm getting comfortable in my armchair for the upcoming entertainment, one of the cons of a recent Offski.
Government Sites are all suffixed with gov.uk Scam sites will even do you a Fishing License for a fee nearly as big as the license itself!
official sites always start www.gov. uk (gaps left so it doesn't turn in to a link) for example car tax is https ://www. gov.uk/
If it was illegal to get customers to pay you money for things which are worthless and which they don't need, an awful lot of businesses would be closed down.
Some are and being shut down. But is it any different to the post office hatching to check your passport for you?
