Space thread – as we seem to be moving into intellectual stratospheres on some threads now, I thought a couple of bits might be interesting ; Here are some interesting ‘space’ photographs BBC News - The most stunning space pictures of 2014 And a link to a podcast by one Chris Hadfield - until recently the commander of the ISS (intl space station),mission specialist on a couple of Space Shuttle flights, and the first Canadian to ‘walk’ in space. Very interesting talk, covers how he became an astronaut – decided that at age 9/10, what its like to be ‘blasted off’ and also the practicalities and likelihood of man going to Mars in the near future. Interestingly, the chap is scared of heights! Recommended listening, if your brain has been stultified/stiltonified by the xmas holidays. Sadly when you look at tge mind boggling numbers regarding anything to do with space. We as a human race are never going to get man any further than Mars. Chemical rocket technology is so linited. Nice link though.
doogleman Although chemical rocket technology will limit space exploration, taking into account the slope of the graph representing our technical advancement, I would like to think that this restriction will be but another step, as new technologies are invented in the near future. Good links TT thanks.
So you're pretty confident in predicting what the human race will not be able to do in 1,000 years time, or in 10,000 years ... Or does "never" to you mean just your own lifetime?
That's a very interesting point. Assuming the same trajectory, you'd think that mankind would be doing some very clever things in a 1'000 years time or so. But it seems to me that this progress is conditioned upon what we get up to now, which is massive exploitation of resources, huge division of labour and massive population growth. Two of these are unsustainable over time, without some very nefarious consequences. So you'd suspect that there will be some sort of black swan in the next few centuries, if not earlier, and the society that we currently know might look very different. I hope that doesn't sound apocalyptic, but I'd be massively surprised if the society of 1'000 years hence was really hugely more developed than our own, and personally doubt that we'll make the next 10'000 years. I think we'll have fucked up definitively by then.
150 years and we'll be extinct. Or living on a space colony. Or have had proof that beings from another experiment are better than us and will be adopting their technology.
The gravity well is a difficult one to climb out of; without a game changer in terms of our understanding of physics and how the universe is structured I am with doogalman. More technology based upon our current understanding ain't going to cut it.

I think we'll have fucked up already....its just inertia that's keeping us moving..[/QUOTE] Corrected for you.
