You have to get the tank free to lift, which means most of the plastic surrounding it. It is just possible to raise the tank and undo the top cylinder spark plug if you REALLY don't want to completely remove the tank, but by the time you've got that far, there's very little effort saved by not lifting the tank off. Whilst it's up, check the loom isn't chafing between the tank and the frame.
