I am sure you guys are aware:- but it has been noted by some people that people are receiving cautions, and cameras going off at lower speeds than previous. Friend received a caution for a 45 in a 40, people getting them 57 in a 50, less than 80 in a 70. Seems some cameras have been re-calibrated lowering the threshold, Around the entrance to Dartford Tunnel. Mobiles again giving them out at lower speeds. There are new guidelines kicking around though I actually do not agree with them, seems in some cases people are getting cautions, and having to go to school at lower speeds than indicated.
The 10% +3 has always been discretionary. The police can, if they so desire, send you a speeding fine if caught at 1mph over the limit. The amount of work that this would create, plus the amount of negative feedback they would receive, would make this an unsuitable decision
But the "speed is a crime" mantra will mean that increasingly, it is not seen as an unsuitable decision.
You have confirmed what I had a hunch was happening mad prof. I still know of two where (allegedly) you need to be doing 45 in a 30 before they flash so will be interesting to see if these get 'corrected'
A neighbour of mine was a senior plod who told me that the limiting factor was the ability to process the paperwork so limits on the day were varied depending upon the likely "hit rates" which were fairly well understood depending upon location, conditions etc. He has been retired for some time and todays technology means that it is easier to process large amounts of data so there is no reason why the precise limits cannot be enforced with no margins of error. The technology to automatically enforce limits through the vehicles ECU is just around the corner anyway.
Yet another way of alienating the general population. It should all be relative to the conditions roads etc . Whilst it generates vast sums of money it will only get worse.
I think it is more to do with now people being sent to school, so they have lowered the threshold, as a money generator, I believe the actual threshold has gone up for people to go to school before points.
You are not kidding. I read in the owners manual of my discovery recently that in the event of an accident it automatically stores the speed being travelled, along with other information such as braking/accelerating force, gps location etc, and can be retrieved by the police if necessary.
There is no way to turn off the data logger in my Garmin 660, it can be deleted after the event but not disabled. Hastily pressing buttons after being stopped by plod opens you up to the more serious charge of destroying evidence. However on it's own I don't think sat nav data could form the basis of a prosecution due to it not being a Home Office approved and calibrated device. As supporting evidence in an otherwise ongoing investigation it is fair game though.
