Speedo and keycode woes.

  1. Hi Folks

The LCD backlight on my speedo went out months ago, so I can't tell by how much I'm breaking the speed limit after dark. But now the nights are drawing in I've shelled out on a new speedo. Fitted it this evening and everything lights up lovely, except the horrid engine immobiliser light comes on, that little dot of orange ruins the blue colour scheme. No probs I thought, but then I found out I don't have a keycode card, got the red key with metal tag, service history ... but no card. Having seen a picture of one online I realise it didn't come with one.

Refitted the old speedo and thankfully everything works - except the backlight - phew!

Does anyone know how easy it is to get the keycode number. The bike has had 5 former keepers, I bought it from a dealer, so will start with a polite letter to the last keeper listed on the V5.

But failing that what are my other options? How easy is it to immobilise the immobiliser? Or is it possible to copy settings from the old speedo to the new one.

btw the bike is a 2004 ST3 so I have no concerns about invalidating a warranty.

    Cheers

    Mike

  2. Give these guys a bell - I understand they can recode and sort - assume with both they will be able to clone your old one

  3. is is the clock set you bought brand new or used? As the code card is not relevant

  4. Hi Bolds

it's a brand new clock set, when I first connected it had to set it up as a ST3 En. But then the orange engine immobiliser light stays on. I've plugged the old unit back in and everything is OK.

    Cheers

  5. ST3 has the immobiliser built into the clocks, unlike the one on the ST4s which is separate, but I think the process to programme a new one to the bike is the same. You need the red key and a black key. The code card is not required, the number on it is for overriding the immobiliser if it fails.

    From Ducati Service Bulletin #20014
    Subject : Immobiliser MY2001 M900S4

    Warning:
    1. If trying a new immobilizer unit, use only the RED key.
As soon as one of the BLACK keys is programmed the immobilizer unit will be permanently memorised.

    2. If trying a new ECU, use only the black key.
As soon as you use the RED key the ECU will become permanently memorized.

    Programming Immobilizer Control Unit

    • Insert red key into ignition switch and wait for at least 30 seconds.
    • Turn the key to on. Led light will turn on.
    • Allow the led light to turn off and turn ignition switch to off within 1 second.
    • Remove the red key, insert a black key and turn the ignition switch to on within 15 seconds.
    • Allow the led light to turn off and turn ignition switch to off within 1 second. If additional black keys need to be programmed, repeat above.
    • Remove black key, insert red key and turn ignition switch to on within 15 seconds.
    • Allow the led light to turn off and turn ignition switch off within 1 second.
    • Allow a minimum of 30 seconds before you turn the ignition switch to the on position.
    • To check for proper key storing insert the red key after 30 seconds. Turn key to on and make sure that the led sends a 0.7 second pulse and then a series of pulses as the number of stored black keys, including the red key.

  6. If the EOBD light is on you should be able to see a fault code using either A or B button on the clocks to view the code which would help to verify the problem

  7. Hi Derek

Doh! Should have read the workshop manual I had properly. Did the red key, black keys swapping thing to program the immobiliser in the clocks and everything is tickety-boo - Many thanks!!!

I now have a spare set of clocks for a ST3/4 or Multi 1000 DS. They work OK but no LCD backlight, main beam bulb has blown and one of the rubber mounted bolts on the back has come loose. But if anyone wants them for spares or repair let me know.

    Cheers

    Mike

  8. Glad to hear you got it sorted :upyeah:

  9. I could use 'em.
    Needs spares for my DS.
    How much?

  10. Hi Manfred

It's the same part number as the 2004 multistrada clock and you will need a red key to program the immobiliser. The clock is showing 26K and the service light is on - I do my own servicing so I just view the light as spanners on board;) Plus it has all the faults listed above, so you're welcome to have it for the cost of postage. PM me for where to send it.
