My superlight has the 17mm front axle, i have the speedo drive but the plate with two prongs sticking out and sits against the wheel bearings and it's dust seal are missing, if you have one i could buy or borrow until I find or make one that would be great. The newer size does fit externally into the wheel but the two teeth won't fit the drive unit and the dust seal is slightly smaller too.
Take a photo of the hub (speedo drive side and empty) and a photo of the speedo drive from the plate side, so we can see what you have got..... The later speedo drive cannot fit the early 17mm spindle wheel, but someone may have fitted 17mm bearings to the later wheel. The machining in the hub is different; the plates are different; the actual drive is different; and the grease seal is different.
I'm positive it's an early wheel as you say the machining for the dust seal is smaller than the later wheel as is the drive unit although the newertype drive plate fits it's too large to drive the old type speedo drive. I will post a couple of pics later.
I think I have posted this fairly recently, but saves you searching........Early axle and drive on the left.
Cheers Al I have the old style axle and correct wheel for the smaller seal on the left, luckily i have a new style wheel and drive in bits so it's easy to see what fits what.
Well....As you have a later wheel and later drive, why not use them? The later drive will not fit the older wheel, even if you use an older drive plate............they are not intermixable / interchangeable. I think you will find that the later drive plate has a greater outside diameter than the early one. Also don't forget the metal ring that the speedo drive slips into and which runs against the grease seal............two different sizes again.
The later wheel is off my 750 which I'm currently cleaning up and will go back on the road in just happen to have it in bits at the same time. I had assumed the drive on the sl was duff and hadn't expected to find bits missing, another lesson learned. !
Baines Racing keep some secondhand parts, so you might be lucky to get an early drive complete from them.
