Speedometer gear drive unit.

Hello all. I know nothing, trying to get a just bought (pig in a poke) 1996 900 Supersport up and running. Among the first 1 million questions is one about the speedo gear drive unit, black donought on axel...spedo cabel comes from... mine (gear unit, that is)is cracked. Is this one of those "and the new one will crack too" deals?... Live with it if it works?,... or someone makes a better one,.... or you'r axel will explode if you don't do such and such,... what? All the e-bay used units look worse than mine, the dealer wants $85, seems fair, but all I am doing now is buying parts, and I want this go round to be stuff I really need to get ir running. Second question is, parts explosions, and where I might get them? I suppose the third would be why the "font" changed. Thanks to all, ...warning, answers in computerese will be pearls before swine.

Yes, sorry to all for delay, seems they all, or most, crack. I am buying enough parts as it is. This can go on hold, the steel sleieve looks fine, so the "business" end of it looks O. K.....wish I could get spell check to work,

 

Thanks, ...remember the last words from the Wizzard,? ....he wasn't really stupid, he was just confounded by the mechanism at hand. I can buy stuff on E-bay, send pictures..sometimes, confer, converse, and otherwise hob-nob with the local baffonery on email..I know how that spell check works. There are several responses to gas92, but I am having some problems getting them there. Ref. 14:40, and 14:53..thanks again.
